Hello rosemary25,
Thank you for your question.
The International Longshoremen's Association Union homepage can be
found here:
http://ilaunion.org/home.asp?h=1
The ILA is described as:
"The International Longshoremen's Association, AFL-CIO is the largest
union of maritime workers in North America, representing upwards of
65,000 longshoremen on the Atlantic and Gulf Coasts, Great Lakes,
major U.S. rivers, Puerto Rico and Eastern Canada. Organized in 1892
along the U.S. Great Lakes, the ILA is affiliated with the American
Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations; the
Canadian Labour Congress and the world-wide International Transport
Workers' Federation. Additionally, the International Organization of
Masters, Mates and Pilots; the United Marine Division Tugboat Workers
and the New York State Supreme Court Officers are affiliated with the
ILA. "
The current president is John Bowers, who has served four terms since
first elected in 1987:
http://ilaunion.org/history_present.asp
"Today, under the presidency of John Bowers, who was International
Executive Vice President for the duration of Gleasons presidency, the
ILA continues to thrive. First elected in 1987, Bowers has served
four consecutive terms as ILA President. In addition, he serves as a
Vice President and Executive Council member of the AFL-CIO and on the
Executive Board of the International Transport Workers Federation
(ITF). "
There also appears to be another organization called The International
Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union. Their we page is reported as
www.ilwu.org, but would not connect tonight. Additionally, most of
their locals report their pages as "unofficial" and I question the
legitimacy of this organization.
For example, one local page can be found here:
http://www.ilwu19.com/
Another page is here:
http://www.ilwu.com/
"This unofficial International Longshore & Warehouse Union website is
designed to foster and encourage the bosses worst nightmare:
Worldwide Solidarity."
Most links from this page are inoperative and I can only believe the
official Longshoremen's Union you desire information for is the ILA.
However, searching simply for ILWU, I find a number of sites that
report what appear to be legitimate news articles:
http://sanjose.bizjournals.com/sanjose/stories/2002/10/28/daily44.html
"ILWU calls for 'fair and equitable' resolution
Howard Dicus
The International Longshore and Warehouse Union says it's the Pacific
Maritime Association that's responsible for lower productivity on West
Coast docks by its "continued refusal to address personnel, congestion
and safety issues."
The accusation is part of the union's response demanded by the Justice
Department to work slowdown charges.
The ILWU says it's also sending Attorney General John Ashcroft a
letter urging him "to support a fair and equitable resolution to the
West Coast bargaining dispute" and asking him to get the White House
to release the names of individuals who attended administration
meetings on the matter."
And...
http://www.pmanet.com/docs/index.cfm/id_subcat/35/id_content/2142588534
"ILWU Stages Widespread Work Slowdowns from Seattle to Los Angeles
Ports; PMA to Close All West Coast Terminals Beginning with Night
Shift Today
-- PMA Plans to Re-Open Terminals Sunday at 8 a.m.--
SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (September 27, 2002) -- Shipping lines up and
down the West Coast reported widespread ILWU-sponsored work slowdowns,
beginning with Thursdays night shift and extending to todays morning
shift. These actions directly followed a resolution from ILWU
headquarters ordering these strike-with-pay actions..."
Unfortunately, www.ilwu.org is not reachable and appears to be down
tonight or I would check further for you.
In searching for information on ILWU's president, I found the
following:
http://www.labournet.net/docks2/0008/elect1.htm
"ILWU president loses election by 22 points
Eric Brazil - San Francisco Examiner
5 August 2000
James Spinner Spinosa has been elected president of the
International Longshore & Warehouse Union, ousting incumbent President
Brian McWilliams by an overwhelming margin.
Spinosa,59, who has been ILWUs mainland vice president for the past
three years, defeated McWilliams by 7,564 votes to 4,812, or 61.1
percent to 38.9 percent. The results were announced late Friday.
Spinosa is just the fifth president in the history of the union, which
represents about 44,000 workers in California, Oregon, Washington,
Hawaii and Alaska.
ILWU founder Harry Bridges served for 42 years, until 1977. He was
succeeded by the popular Jimmy Herman, who headed the union until
1991, when David Arian was elected for a single term,1991-94.
McWilliams has completed his second term."
I trust my research has answered your question. If a link above should
fail to work or anything require further explanation, please do post a
Request for Clarification and I will be pleased to assist further.
