Question ID: 156840
Hello,

I need a list of the premium/subscription online consumer services in
Japan. These are online services where the consumer pays a
subscription fee to access content/services.

These services can be of any type. For example, in the US they could
include content (CNN, ABC, consumer reports, Wall Street Journal
etc.), software (McAfee, CyberPatrol, etc.), games (Sony, NCSoft,
etc.) and others.

I am looking to get something like 30 services. For each service I
need to know if possible
- Name of service
- Description of the service
- Price
- Company name
- Number of subs
- Any points of interest

My cutoff date is 7 February, but earlier is better.

Thank you,

James

Hi -

I've collected several sites. Do you require the information points
for every one of them? What if a site has no english characters?

Thanks,

I do require the information points for each site, although in some
cases they will be unavailable (eg number of subs).

If you dont read Japanese characters it will be difficult to know what
the service and the pricing is unless you got a comprehensive list for
somewhere.

I could clarify better if I had an idea as to what you've found so
far.

Thank you

James

I should hopefully be able to find enough sites that aren't in
unreadable characters. I will say though, that 99% of them will not
have that subscription data.

Hello again -

I've never heard of any kind of service that offers
"subscription-based" entry to purchase actual products. Normally the
products are just available for a specific price -- such as a store.
For example, Disney Japan's products are priced per item, like any
store.

The reason I ask this is because you mention examples of places that
are retail-esque in their structure... such as McAfee. That company
sells anti-virus products -- you don't need a subscription to access
the products. You just buy them at a price per product, like you
would in a store.

Are you interested in knowing of places that sell items online, but
have no subscription-based entry?

Thanks,

It doesnt have to be products, it can be things like horoscopes,
financial news, music downloads, gaming. Norton antivirus is a
subscription product. You have to keep renewing your licence every
year/3 months/month.

See http://answers.google.com/answers/main?cmd=threadview&id=156854
for the same question answered about the UK.

Hello -

Unfortunately, it's not nearly as easy with the Japanese sites. We're
dealing with a completely different language here. Here's an example:

http://www.wowow.co.jp/

You can't even tell what it is. :) I've worked on this for several
hours. I might have to cede his question over to someone who speaks
Japanese, if I can't make any progress.

I have, however, found a list of Japanese Internet service providers.
Will something like this suffice?

These service providers are "subscription based"... they fit your
criteria. Just didn't know if a list that was comprised of
essentially the same type of business would be sufficient.

Hello macaonghus-ga,

I've discovered some alternative search strategies that are yielding
some results. I should have a list hopefully before your deadline.

Thank you for your list. This is good. Please note that not all of
these sites are subscription sites. In particular web hosting is not
considered an online subscription service and neither are offline
magazines where the website promotes the subscription, but the content
remains offline. If a publication offers paid access to online
(password protected) content, then that counts. If you pay to get the
publication sent to you snail-mail, that is not an online
subscription. Likewise ISPs are borderline online subscriptions (I
have left in there any that are there) depending on how far along the
access------content scale they fall.

The following are not subscription sites; if you do not understand why
just let me know and I will answer.

That is 17. Could you please find 17 subscription services to replace
those? Thank you very much.

Hello

This is a message from a colleague of the question-asker. He cannot
access his account right now. You may wish to wait until he confirms
this message, or act now.

4 5 6 7 15 18 19 20 21 22 23 24 25 26 29
31 32

That is 17. Could you please find 17 subscription services to replace
those? Thank you very much.

James
