Most people's problem with the IE address bar is not being able to
delete the drop down record of URL's visited. I have the opposite
problem - suddenly, there is no dropdown list, simply the URL I happen
to be on. I've recently changed ISP's (via a CD-ROM). Could this have
changed the settings? If so, any suggestions on how to re-install the
address bar dropdown list? |

Have you tried going to TOOLBARS->VIEW->ADDRESS BAR and make sure
there is a check beside ADDRESS BAR?

I'm sorry, wrong order...
It should have said, "VIEW->TOOLBARS->ADDRESS BAR and make sure
there is a check beside ADDRESS BAR?"

In case tutuzdad's solution does not work, are you running McAfee
Internet Security or any Internet Security software? Some of these
delete history by default for privacy.

To tutuzdad, yes there's certainly a tick by "address bar"; and to
xnolanx, I've just downloaded IE6 SP1, but it hasn't reinstalled the
Address Bar dropdown list. (In fact, I'm rather mystified, since
there's no indication that my IE set-up has been modified at all.)
Incidentally, the History listing is still working if I activate it,
so I could use that to visit previous web-pages, instead of the
Address Bar listing.

Another thing you can try:
Click on Tools --> Internet Options
Click the Content Tab and then click on AutoComplete.
Is Use AutoComplete for Web addresses checked?

My thanks and apologies to those who have tried to solve this problem.
By trial and error I have now realised that IE does not include in the
Address Bar dropdown list the URLs of those visited sites which are
already on your Favorites list. And when I first noticed what I
thought to be the problem, I had been extensively visiting Favorite
sites. MS's logic is presumably that you don't need the URL in two
places. Personally, I think they're wrong - it's far easier to find
and click on a previously visited URL from the relatively short
Address Bar dropdown list than from a long list of Favorites. Sorry
and thanks again to everyone.
