How can I remove small minor scratches from my stainless steel range?
They were caused by a plastic hand held vaccum cleaner, they are
surface scratches with virtually no depth.

Hello subsailor,

Thank you for your question.

I searched ["stainless steel" +remove +scratches] to find the
following:

"Removing scratches from stainless steel appliances

I just built a house and stocked the kitchen with stainless steel
appliances...

...my stainless steel cooktop is accumulating some minor "against the
grain" scratches from pots and pans and such.

What are my options for fixing these blemishes or making them less
noticable. any suggestions appreciated."

Answers and suggestions:

"Brush stainless steel comes in various finishes. No. 3 and No. 4 are
typical. These finishes are hard to repair when scratches appears.
Another brush finish is the HairLine finish. The advantage of this
finish is that the grain is continous and runs the length of the
sheet. The importance of continous long grain HairLine finish is to
allow for repair of minor scratches. One can easily repair scratches
using the proper grit 80-120 abrasive pads or sandpaper and sand the
length of the grain until the scratches are removed.

...To remove scratches, they use 3-M's Scotchbrite pads. The coarser
grey one and the finer maroon or purple coloured lighter pad for
finishing off.

Never, they said, go 'against' the grain but buff/pad in the same
direction."

Their FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions) shows:

"The stainless steel on my refrigerator door, dishwasher, and/or
countertop is scratched. How can I remove the scratches?

Scratches are difficult to remove. Most kitchen appliances, sinks, and
counters have a polished finish with short directional polishing
lines. Restoring a polished finish to its original appearance requires
a professional such as a company that specializes in fabricating or
polishing stainless steel. If the refrigerator or dishwasher door
panel is replaceable, purchasing a new panel is normally more cost
effective than professional refinishing. The homeowner may want to
consider obtaining replacement panels with angel hair, distressed,
swirl, or embossed finish. These finishes help to hide light
scratching and can be obtained from companies that specialize in
stainless steel finishes.Counters and appliance doors that are not
easily removable must be refinished in place. When the counter is
refinished, it may have long rather than short polishing lines. If a
slightly different finish is acceptable and cost is a consideration, a
homeowner can refinish the counter or appliance using a non-metallic
abrasive pad such as a Scotch Brite® pad. This can be done by rubbing
the surface with the pad using long uniform strokes in the same
direction as the current polishing lines. This will not eliminate deep
scratches. A professional may offer this finish as a less expensive
option. The resulting finish is normally referred to as a hairline or
long grain finish. Some appliance companies are starting to offer this
finish."

You can find lots of sites talking about the use of scotchbrite pads
and the like and brushed stainless steel. But on a another tack, there
are also powder polishes such as those talked about on stretcher.com:

http://www.stretcher.com/stories/01/010723a.cfm

"Is there any way to remove or repair scratches on the bottom of a
stainless steel sink. We just bought a new expensive Kindred sink and
accidentally scratched the bottom in several places."

"I don't know how much the sink is scratched, and I don't think
there's a miracle cure. I want to recommend a product that cleanses &
polishes at once: Bar Keepers Friend. If you have any questions or
comments you can reach the Servaas Laboratories at 1200 Waterway Blvd,
Indianapolis, IN 46202 or 1-800-433-5818. Web site is
www.barkeepersfriend.com or e-mail is BKF@Iquest.net

It is found in the Comet/Bon Ami section of your grocery store. Price
is about twice as much as Comet, but you need little to do a job. It
works well when used as a cleanser such as Comet or better yet, use it
wet/damp, let it dry & then buff it off. You'll notice that water
beads in the sink right after cleaning/polishing it. It works better
than the special bottle cleansers sold specifically for smooth top
stoves. I no longer purchase those cleansers at $10 a bottle when I'm
better satisfied with BKF. "

I personally use Barkeeper's friend on my expensive stainless steel
cookware and can highly recommend it.

You will find a variety of other suggestions on this page and it is
well worth the read.

And remarkably, I even found a page on cleaning and polishing the
DeLorean auto (remember the stainless steel car?):

http://www.dmcnews.com/faq/c_body.htm

"Care & Feeding - Stainless Steel Body Maintenance

No special care is needed in keeping the body looking beautiful. It is
maintained about the same way you clean your stainless kitchen sink.
Minor scratches and scuff marks are readily removed with a
"Scotchbrite" pad by rubbing with the original grain of the panels.
The only precaution is to minimize any rubbing across the grain of the
panels as this may scuff them. The best advice to keep the stainless
steel in good condition is to keep your DeLorean clean and avoid using
metal abrasives when rubbing out scuff marks. The owners manual
advises "Wash panels with warm water and low suds detergent. Stains of
tar or grease may be removed with gasoline or white mineral spirits."
How many auto manufacturers recommend using paint thinner to remove
stubborn stains from the body? Larger/deeper scratches and severe
abuse require the use of the original texturing jigs to get the grain
correct. These are not difficult to come by and there are numerous
service centers (especially the larger original dealerships) that have
this expertise."

Interesting.

I'll close with a few other links on polishing stainless steel, though
there are many, many sites that discuss this problem:

http://www.specialtystainless.com/re-polishing_ss.htm

http://www.blancoamerica.com/product_care_all.html

http://www.sisweb.com/ms/sis/micromes.htm

I trust my research will help you learn how to remove your scratches.
If a link above should fail to work or anything require further
explanation, please do post a Request for Clarification and I will be
pleased to assist further.

Regards,
