Hello tonelip,

In my opinion, the best program to do this is the latest version of
Microsoft Windows Media Player.

You can download the latest version here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/search.aspx?displaylang=en&categoryid=4

I must warn you, that if you intend to play the files on an mp3 player
that you should not let the program obtain licenses automatically for
your mp3 files because they might become unplayable on your mp3
player.

This is the feature that allows Windows Media Player to do this:
"Automatically fix album information in your MP3 and WMA collection
with Auto Info Auto Info can automatically fix or add album details
(tags) to your MP3 and WMA files such as artist or album name, year,
composer, or track number."

I hope this was the type of answer you were expecting. If you need any
clarification, please let me know and I will do my best to further
assist you.

Note that even if you do not obtain licenses for your mp3 files, you
will STILL be able to add the information to your files. These are two
completely separate features.

Hi, I'm approaching from a different angle here. I see that probably
want to change the names of an mp3 file. Usually, the mp3 file is a
read-only files, that's why we cannot rename it and stuff.

To be able to do this, all you have to do is (if you're using a ms
windows), highlight the files you want to change the names, right
click, choose properties, then change the attributes to archives.

Now, with your mp3 player, such as WinAmp, you can edit the names
without seeing that annoying error message of 'Cannot update ID Tag'

If you're using OS other than Windows, I'm sure you know how to change
the attributes :)

Hope this helps,
ephi :)

Hello ivles,

It is still possible to rename read only files... I just double
checked with Windows XP and it works. Not sure if this will work with
other versions of Windows but my memory says yes.

Assuming the MP3 files have ID3 tags in them that identify their
contents, there is an excellent shareware program called
"MP3TagStudio" (http://www.magnusbrading.com/mp3ts/ ) . It will
allow you to automatically (in a batch mode or manually), rename files
to the contents of their ID3 tags. (You can also tag a file from it's
filename!). A fully-functional demo is free, and registration is
nominal if you find it useful. There are also a number of other MP3
management tools within the application that are excellent for
cleaning up one's collection. I've used it for years, and it is
highly recommended for these types of activities.
