Why are the freeways by Barstow,Boron, etc. red?

Hello,

It's red because of a rock used to surface the road called "clinker".
More can be found on various webpages, and I'll quote them below:

"
Clinker, sometimes incorrectly referred to as scoria, is the baked red
sandstone and shale that lie above a burned coal seam.  These are
literally "cooked rocks."  Heated to high temperatures, oxygen
combined with iron in the rock to form iron ixide, producing the bands
of red rust color...
...
Clinker is one of the best road surfacing materials and explains the
red color of some highways...
"
