Hi,
I have just installed winxp professional, version 2002, build 2600, on
a clean disk. Then I installed the latest driver for my graphic card,
Hercules 9000PRO (ATI chipset), from Hercules site. After restart and
before logon screen, my computer went into Sleep mode. And after few
unsuccessful restart I heard very sharp sound from HDD (about 5
seconds) and got this message ...UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME...
Then I install winxp again, and ATI driver from ATI site instead of
Hercules driver but again the same. Then I went in safe mode, uninstall
graphic driver, restart and manage to start winxp. But ATI driver is
still there and system is unstable.(sometimes goes in Sleep mode for a
few seconds).
I would like to know explanation for that and solution.I ran winME on
this pc before and didn't have any problem. And what is that sound-can
this damage HDD?
Best regards
nikenn

Hi joseleon,
According to Microsoft there are two causes for UNMOUNTABLE BOOT
VOLUME error:
1 Incorrect HDD cable
2 The file system is damaged
I have the right HDD cable so could be only second cause. But I thought
if I install winxp on newly formated disk there is nothing left to
repair so I can skip Recovery Console. Is that right?
And my problem at the moment is not that error. My computer just goes
in Sleep mode after startup and before logon screen.I thought it's
known issue because I use the most popular hardware and software.
Regards
nikenn

Hi nikenn-ga,

I'm not sure what may be causing those errors but if you haven't
already, you may want to try searching for "UNMOUNTABLE_BOOT_VOLUME"
using Google as well as Google Groups.

As for the sound that you hear, before displaying BSOD's, generally
the harddisk is powered down so the sound you're most likely hearing.
I've heard this a number of times too and it shouldn't damage the
harddrive. You might even notice that your computer appears to be
even more quiet since the harddrive is no longer spinning.

Good luck with finding a solution,
mrbuzz-ga
