I'm looking for a really great baby monitor. I would like a baby
monitor (both audio and visual) that works really great in low light
situations. My experience is that the models with 3 infra-red leds do
not provide a good view of the baby unless the camera is RIGHT on top
of them. Another concern is that the signal it broadcasts must be
clear and easy to adjust. Again, experience has shown that poor
quality reception is a huge problem. Also, if there is a way to get a
little bit of security (like maybe the nieghbors won't pick up our
conversations)with these systems, that would be great.

mrtrivia..

Thanks for your question. As a parent of twin 3 1/2 year olds, I know
how valuable a monitor is. Our house has a first floor master
bedroom, so it was a requirement to have a monitor. We opted for a
sound only monitor as we didn't see the need for video (though I
REALLY wanted it, being the gadget freak that I am). That being said,
there are several high quality video baby monitors available. Bear in
mind that each house is different. The distance between the camera
and the monitor, outside electrical interference and other factors can
have an effect on the performance of the monitor. I have listed
several below along with reviews and comments regarding them. I would
recommend that you pick the one you feel would best fit your needs and
give it a try. If it doesn't work within your home, return it and go
the next. I think the best way to learn about a product is from the
people that use it. I have provided links to customer reviews and
comparisons of the various models as well as a sample
review. These are typically 900mHz devices (same as cordless phones)
so there may be some reception issues when using a phone. Option
would be to move the phone or upgrade to a 2.4gHz phone. As for
security, if you use a cordless phone, you have as much chance of
being picked up by neighbors as with a monitor. I can tell you we
have had the same monitor for over 3 years and I can only recall once
or twice where we picked things up, and it was broken and had static.

Baby's Quiet Sounds Video Monitor
In reading the reviews on Amazon.com
[http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005YWN0/] where it has
received an average of 4 out of 5 stars from people that have used it,
it appears that this may be your best option. Several of the
reviewers compared it to the Safety First model (below) and said
though it was cheaper, it was better:

"I've been looking for the best monitor out there for me and the
Summer monitor is the one. This is a much better monitor than the
Safety 1st and it's alot cheaper! I had to return the Safety 1st
monitor since it didn't work out for me. There is too much
interference!

However, this Summer monitor really works for me. I have three 900MHZ
phones, three computers, and alot of other stuff going on in my house
and the picture is very clear most of the time. Of course, I do get
interference only when I use the phone right next to the monitor
(because of the similar frequency) but once I move the phone further
away, the picture is clear again. Just imagine how perfect it would be
if I upgrade my phone (it's time that I do).

The only negative thing is that the picture does get a little less
clear at night but this is not a big problem. The picture still looks
good and most monitors get less clearer at night. I live in a
two-story house and I can still see my daughter downstairs when I'm
cooking. I can hear her really good too, over all the other noises
around her.

Overall, this is a great monitor and I am very satisfied with its
performance. The picture is clear most of the time anywhere in my
house. If I didn't have the 900MHZ phones, the clarity will be
perfect. All I know if that the Safety 1st monitor should've been
better for me because of the higher frequency but it wasn't. This
Summer monitor is alot better even with the similar frequency of the
phones I have. That just says how great this monitor is-BETTER &
CHEAPER TOO!"

The reviews here, while more numerous, aren't as favorable as for the
Baby's Quiet Sounds Video Monitor. Bad reception, bad product and it
is more expensive thatn the Baby's Quiet Sounds Video Monitor

At Epinions [http://www.epinions.com/kifm-B-BEquip-Nursery-Monitors-Safety_1st_Child_View_Monitor_and_Television/display_~reviews],
it has received 4 out of 5 stars, with similar complaints.

"I bought this product because a friend had it and loved it. However,
she bought hers back in 2000. I bought mine brand new in Sept. 2002.
The reception is very fuzzy. I can only see my daughter if she moves.
Otherwise, she just looks like a dark blob. In fact, if she gets up
from her nap and we look at the monitor together, it still looks like
she's in the bed because her stuffed animals are laying there and I
can't distinguish her from them when she's actually sleeping. The only
way I can tell what part is what is if she sits up and then lays back
down -- I can determine her orientation on the bed only then. I'm very
disappointed with the product and have dedided to take it back. We
originally purchased it to view my 25 month old while she transitioned
from her crib to her bed and then we were going to move it to the
nursery in anticipation of our new baby due in January. As it stands,
I would not be able to see if the baby is breathing, if she has rolled
over, or even if she has spit up -- she'll just look like a dark blob
in the crib. Not worth the money at all!!!"

Now, there are other reviews that say they love the product, so you
may want to skim through some just to get a feel. I did notice a
common theme among those who had purchased this model was the
reception was bad and the picture was dark.

Another review of this product can be found at Baby Navigator-Monitors
[http://www.babynavigator.com/Monitors/monitors.htm]. Notice their
one complaint is the fuzzy picture.

In reading the reviews and seeing the available products out there,
the above two appear to be the market leaders, with the Baby's Quiet
Sounds Video Monitor being the best one available.

Thanks again for your question and I hope the above information has
been helpful. If you need any additional clarification, please let me
know prior to rating my answer.

Great start, but here's a more specific question you might be able to
help me with regarding these monitors. Does the number of LED's
matter? Does more LEDs give me better night vision?

Clarification of Answer by tar_heel_v-ga on 08 Feb 2003 11:35 PST
The number of LED's does matter in that more LEDs emit more light.
Should you get one of the camera's and not get enough light to produce
the clarity you like, you may want to take a look at the AVCOM
Infrared Night Vision Booster
[http://cephaliccarnage.com/pages/IR010.html]. This is a wall
mountable device that has 20 LED illuminators that you can point in
any direction you like.

Hope this helps!
