Dear suzette,

Were the "academic" murderers featured in the film a group of graduate
students, targeting victims with right-wing political beliefs?

It's not an "independent film," but Alfred Hitchcock's "Rope" has a similar plot.

Suzette,

"Rope" might fit but there was only one murder as far as I recollect.
The following 1995 movie is more like it:

The Last Supper (at Internet Movie DataBase)
http://us.imdb.com/Title?0113613
"A group of idealistic, but frustrated, liberals succumb to the
temptation of murdering rightwing pundits for their political beliefs"

If you want to order the movie, follow the "Shop" links on above page.

Hope it helps!

For what it's worth, I think that expertlaw and j_philipp are correct;
"The Last Supper" was the film that came to mind when I read this
question.

I third that, your film sounds a lot like "The Last Supper".

I seem to recall they also bury the dead bodies under tomato plants.
Although I get confused sometime... Anyone?

But is it a 'film noir'?

I thought that, by definition, these had to be filmed in monochrome?

Regarding the color thing, I don't think so. Noir refers to more of a
mood than anything else. There have been color films that are
considered noirish.
