Dear grump33-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question.

KET (Kentucky Educational Television) DISTANCE LEARING which focuses
on Humanities, German, Latin and Physics courses, indicates that
Suetonius (AD 69 - about AD 140), a Roman biographer and antiquarian,
mentioned in his “writings” that Horace never married. The article
does not specify which of these writings supposedly indicated this
(presumably “SVETONI TRANQVILLVI DE POETIS VITA HORATI” or “LIFE OF
HORACE”), but does go on to say that little is known of the last five
years of Horace’s life. I read the story and found no reference to a
statement that Horace remained a bachelor, so I continued on in my
research.

Then I located the book “Horace”, by Peter Levi, which examines in
great detail, among other things, Horace’s romantic life and the
reasons why he never married. This confirmed, to some degree what I
had learned previously.

In searching for information about Quintus Horatius Flaccus I queried
the “Millennium Library Whos’ Who” database, which offered us this in
the biography of Horace which also seems to confirm the story:
“Horace, who never married, was buried next to his patron Maecenas.”

Just before his 57th birthday, and only two months after the death of
his patron C.Cilnius Maecenas, Horace died of a sudden illness on
November 27, 8BC. He was buried in the garden on the Esquiline Hill
next to the tomb of his friend. Shortly before his death, as he had no
biological heirs, Horace dictated his will naming Augustus as his sole
recipient of his properties and possessions. Subsequent transfer of
the Horace’s rights to the estate known as Sabine confirms this.
