My sister (70) uses Activelle as HRT. Now she read about the
"all-enhancer" DHA (for libido) but did not find out if both can be
used concurrently. Probably bacause of the HRT her bone density is
high and she is in full health -only insensitive to sexual advances.
Info, anybody?

Hi,
Sounds like a question for her to pose to her doctor.

HRT has recently been implicated in breast cancer and warnings have
been issued about it. As a woman in her 70s your sister has a
relatively high risk. Before bringing any other hormones into the
picture, she should have a long talk with her doctor.

carmi604...

I've informed kevinmd-ga of your question. He may be
able to assist you with drug interaction information.

I noticed that you have drawn KevinMD's attention to this question.

Dear Dr. K:

Some time ago, you had yourself posted a question about part-time
Internet opportunities for physicians. About.com currently has two
open Guide positions that would be suitable for physicians. They are
looking for a Guide to Back and Neck Injury/Chronic Pain, and also for
a Guide to Infertility. You can learn more details here:

http://beaguide.about.com/topics.htm

And a note to carmi-604:

I am sorry to jump into the middle of your question, but could not
figure out another way to reach kevinMD.

Hello - thanks for asking your question.

I used the PDRŽ Electronic Library™ Drug Interactions and typed in
your two medications:
"This useful tool checks for drug-to-drug interactions cited in the
PDR database. Simply enter the names of two or more drugs (either by
brand or generic name). In minutes, MerckMedicus displays the critical
interaction information that you and your patients need to know."

"DHEA Plus Capsules (Wellness International)
Dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), Ginkgo biloba
may interact with:
The labeling of this product lists no interactions with the other
products or foods entered

Activella Tablets (Pharmacia & Upjohn)
Estradiol, Norethindrone Acetate
may interact with:
The labeling of this product lists no interactions with the other
products or foods entered"

There does not seem to be any drug interaction between the 2
medications according to the PDR. Please consult your personal
physician for your personal case.

To pocoloco - thanks for the links. Much appreciated.

Hello,
A fellow Researcher has brought this to my attention:
"Estrogen
It is possible that DHEA may influence the level of estrogen in the
body. For this reason, some women on estrogen replacement therapy may
need to adjust their dosage. This should be discussed with your
healthcare provider."
http://www.healthandage.com/html/res/com/ConsSupplements/DehydroepiandrosteroneDHEAcs.html#Interactions

Although this is not an interaction per se (i.e. they still can be
used concurrently), the side effects of the estrogen used in HRT
should be monitored by your personal physician while on DHEA.

Thanks,
Kevin, M.D.
