Chrismy:

What family name do you associate with the described crest, or is that
something you're hoping to find out? By "trace" do you mean that you
want the origin, devolopment, and meaning of the crest if possible?

Brettquest

Further to my question about a crest - I have some pieces of silver
bearing this crest and motto inherited from my grandmother - Mrs
Taylor who died in 1941. The hallmarks on the silver give dates of
Sheffield 1921 and Birmingham 1889. If you would give me your email
address, I will try to send a copy of the crest to you. Many thanks
chrismy

Hi chrismy-ga,

Researchers aren't allowed to exchange personal information, including
email addresses, through this service. Perhaps you could upload your
photo to a third party site of which there are many which are free,
then provide a link to the photo here so that researchers can view it.
Here's one I've used with success: www.villagephotos.com

Best of luck,

Chrismy:

You refer to "pieces of silver." Do you mean silver coins, or as I
suspect, other kinds of silver pieces? If so, what specific types of
silver items do you have?

Thanks,

Brettquest

No need to clarify further, this is the most convienient method to
update you. Circumstances often require that I work on the requests I
adopt from my home computer, and I often try obtain precise
information from remote sources via e-mail or phone. Waiting for
replies takes time. I do have some information on your request, but if
I can't answer your request with the specificity it deserves by some
time tomorrow, I will post what I have found as a comment. If I'm
stymied Another researcher might build upon what I can offer to your
satisfaction.

I need to know which family the crest and motto I described comes
from. The crest appears on two pieces of silver that came from my
grandmother - Mrs Taylor, maiden name Newman. She died in 1941 and
one of the pieces is hallmarked Sheffield 1921 and the other
Birmingham 1889. I may be able to send an illustration of the crest
if you can give me an email address to send it to.
Many thanks - chrismy

Trace a family crest of a greyhound facing left and holding a quoit or
ring in its right forepaw 0ver a motto NATALE SOLUM DULCE

Chrismy:

Greetings, and thank you for your patience in awaiting an answer. The
crest on the silver pieces you have is indeed a crest of the Taylor
family; the married name of your grandmother who bequeathed those
items to you.

I contacted a regional company which both custom designs such crests
and serves as a resource for heraldry research. I provided them, on
your behalf, with your description of the crest and motto. A reply
with best wishes arrived this afternoon confirming that "Taylor" was
the only name the company's reference library indicated for both the
described crest and that motto. The reply cited Fairbairn's Book of
Crests for the traditional translation of "Natale Solum Dulce," which
is "Sweet is our native soil."

The words of the motto magnify the symbolic meanings of the images
from the crest. A greyhound traditionally symbolizes the
characteristics of courage, vigilance, and loyalty. A ring expresses
fidelity. In combination, the crest and motto must signify the Taylor
family as both a principled and patriotic people.

I sincerely hope this information increases your appreciation of the
items your grandmother left you, as well as your family heritage. I
appreciate the opportunity to address and respond to your request.

Regards,

Brettquest
