I'm using Outlook Express (v5.06 for Macintosh) and running Mac OS
9.2.2
Recently I'm encountering lots (8-12 a day) type 2 errors when
attempting to send mail. The app quits but I don't have to restart my
computer....I recently added a second Identity at both my home and
work computer so that I could check personal emails from work and vice
versa...I'm having a similar problem at home. Could my rash of crashes
be related to adding this second identity. I tried downloading the
latest version and reinstalling but the problem persists on both
computers |

What type of connection are you using (i.e. Broadband or Dial-up)? Who is your ISP?

Verizon DSL on both computers....they are in different zip
codes....The reason I think it's related to the Identitites is that I
established the Identities within days of each other and that's when
the problem started....
The Verizon connection has been in place for a while...I don't seem to
be having loading Web Pages via Explorer....
I'm also wondering if there's some type of conflict with another
program...

Hello Markp125,
You appear to be on the right path. I did a search, but can't seem to
find any reported problems with that version (other than compatibility
problems with Mac OS X). A few things you can try include:
- remove the "second identity". On my system it is in
MacHD:Documents:Microsoft User Data:Identities:
it may be that the file was corrupted in some way - I can't be sure.
- remove the preferences file
MacHd:System Folder:Preferences:Outlook Express Prefs
[ditto]
- restore the "before" files from backup (if you have them)
You did not mention how you created the second identity. If it was by
copying the "Main Identity" data between the machines, that may have
confused OE. Let me know the results - if negative, I can dig some
more.

Also, have you alloted more memory to OE? Type 2 errors are
sometimes/often associated with memory troubles. Go to the Get Info
box for that application, select Show: Memory from the drop-down menu
and bump up the Minimum and Preferred sizes.
Additionally, although it may not help you with the current problem,
the following site is a good source for Mac OE hints/tips:

Hello Markp125,
Hmm. Let me make sure I understand what you tried.
1 you increased memory (no effect)
2 you deleted the identity [did you try without the deleted
identity?]
3 you added the identify again [how?] (no effect)
and no mention of removing the preference files nor bringing back the
original files from backup. If 2 works - that would imply we could do
the #2 solution below.
A few ideas come to mind:
1 - Remove all the existing files and start from scratch w/ the two
identities and test. [don't delete them, move them to another
directory] This would rule out a corruption problem of the data files.
2 - create a small applescript (or two) to do the following:
o copy the desired identity into the proper directory (and the
unwanted one into another directory)
o run Outlook express
In this way - you can alternate between the two identities in case
Outlook Express cannot handle the two together. I can explain how to
do this by recording the actions, doing the steps manually, and then
saving the script.
Let me know what you find out - I'd really like to help get this fixed
for you.

Hello Markp125,
Are you still interested in a solution for this problem or have you
fixed it yourself with the information already provided?

Problem has still not been solved...just to be clear...I don't have
both Identities open simultaneously.....I don't even think you can do
that, can you....You can only switch between them but (I believe) only
one is active at a time...
People must do this all the time, right....I mean use Outlook Express
to manage more than one email account.....
I haven't tried running with just one Identity although I suspect that
will work fine...I'm going to delete the identity right now

Hello Markp125,
What you describe sounds like a good approach to get back to a stable
configuration.
Separately, I ran some tests on my copy of Outlook Express (5.0.2)
running under Classic (9.2.2) on Mac OS X 10.2.4. I created a second
identity by following the help instructions which said to
File -> Switch Identity
Select new
Enter the information for the "new identity"
and I was able to switch back and forth between the two identities
without problem. Perhaps there is some information stored behind the
scenes where you can't copy the identities between systems and must
create them from scratch on both systems.
If that doesn't work - the only option I can see left is to use
Applescript to give you the ability to switch between two identities
(quitting the program between changes). I will describe how to do that
if the other ideas don't work.

I don't know that the script really helps me....if I'm going to quit
and relaunch each time I switch Identities I might as well take my
chances and keep doing it the same way...the error always occurs as I
hit send...probably crashes every 10th time...at that point I have to
relaunch anyway....

Another thing to make sure of, is that your minimum memory size is the
same as the suggested memory size in the memory configuration. I've
heard of issues arising from those being unequal.

From a newsgroup posting:
"First, locate your Outlook Express user data:
Open Outlook Express normally. When it opens, go to File -> Switch
Identities. Click New and create a new identity with an obscure name,
Then,
when you have it open, hide Outlook Express and open Sherlock. Do a
search
for the name you entered. A folder will then appear with the exact
name. Click on it, and look below to see the path. The folder named
Identities is where your data is stored. Make a note of the location.
It
should be in one of the following two places:
* Macintosh HD:Documents:Microsoft User Data:Identities
* Outlook Express 5 Folder:Identities
Now, in the new identity (which you can now rename), go to File ->
Import.
Choose to import from an application, which is Outlook Express.
Choose to
import everything. When the "Locate your OE users folder" screen
comes up,
choose the folder you found above, but instead choose your former
identity
(not the obscure name). Everything should appear. If it works, you
shouldn't have the problem anymore and you can delete the old
identity."
Another suggestion from another posting was to hold down the option
key when Outlook opens and selected "yes" to compact the database.

I just fixed my type 2 errors. Turns out there was some email message
that was causing the problem. I checked my mail from somewhere else
to clear out the server. Everything's fine now. When you send mail,
you're also receiving it [with that send/receive button]. So try
checking your email from another location, clearing out the messages
on the server, and then try things again.
