My boss is debating whether to buy a new Porsche Boxster or a new BMW Z4 and he would like to know how the two BRANDS (not models) generally fare after 100,000+ miles of primarily highway driving. He is under the impression that BMW's, if treated well, can be expected to "live" for at least 100,000 highway miles. He does not know if he should expect the same from Porsche. An answer to my question could come in the form of one or several sources (preferably objective and credible, e.g. "Car & Driver") stating that, "after 100,000 + highway miles, BMWs will generally be found in good working order, while Porsches will be ready for the scrapyard." To give you additional background, my boss currently drives a 1991 BMW 3-series with 150,000 mostly highway miles on it. With the help of the occasional relatively inexpensive visit ($500 - $1,000) to the mechanic's garage, it is still running strong. This personal experience is part of the reason he trusts BMW. He wants to know if he is likely to have a similar experience with Porsche. Thanks! | |

I couldn't find an authorative article, but this could help. Dozens of owners have detailed their cars history and their satisfaction with it at CarSurvey.org By reading each report, you can get an idea of which make has the best longevity. I have run two Porsche for over 100 000 miles, covered over a period of about 5 years in each case, and found both cars to be more than capable of these mileages. The main criteria for longevity are oil changes with quality lubricants and planned maintenance rather than the reactive approach. Neither car developed any significant faults and the interiors looked as new when each vehicle was sold. Also, I was sorry to see each one go, as was my eldest daughter! Mike |
