I am thinking that your author might be Richard Woodman, who wrote the
14 book series of the adventures of Nathaniel Drinkwater aboard HMS
Cyclops. If I am on the right track let me know and I will pursue this
further with you.

I do not think Woodman is the right author. I looked at his novels and
the titles do not seem familar. The book series I am looking for has
as its theme the China trade, primarily between New England and
Southern China - Canton during the clipper ship era. The books are a
series of romance novels . . . I read them in paperback.

Do any of these descriptions match your memories?
#1 Captain of clipper searching for treasure around Java and the East
Indies - involves pirates, romance, tidal wave
#2 Captain Ralls - captain of one of the last sailing ships in the
South Seas - lives and loves of those who sailed in her.
#3 Mysterious female figure in the South Seas demands homage from
local people - is she a cunning adventuress or a witch?
#4 Two brothers race their clippers from New England to San Francisco,
competing for honor, the woman they both love - and gold.
#5 "A man violent as the sea. A woman stormy as a Pacific typhoon - A
novel throbbing with high adventure." Historical fiction in the
Southern Seas. "Swift, romantic adventure among the far eastern
islands."
These books were first published in the fifties and sixties. If you
think they might be what you're looking for, please let us know.

Number 5 looks like a possibility. I believe there were two brothers
competing against each other. There was a sereies of 3-5 books in
chronological order. A key topic was the opium trade.

Hello again
I've been trying to find out if Garland Roark is the author you're
looking for. Unfortunately I haven't found much detail about his
novels and no references to opium wars - but clippers do feature in at
least some of his novels.
Some of his titles are:
Wake of the Red Witch
Fair Wind to Java
Rainbow in the Royals
The Lady and the Deep Blue Sea
The Outlawed Banner
Should the Wind be Fair
Slant of the Wild Wind
- and he wrote several more though not all are set in the same part
of the world.
If you think this is your man, I can find you places to buy secondhand
copies of his novels, but descriptions of the plots are not easy to
find.
Here's a description of a movie based on one of his books:
"sea captain whose search for a cache of diamonds involves him in
romance with a Javanese dancing girl, conflict with a notorious pirate
leader, imprisonment, and danger from an erupting volcano and a tidal
wave which destroys the island of Karakatau. Setting: Dutch East
Indies in the latter part of the 19th century".
Let me know if you think Roark is the author you seek and I'll be
happy to write up a complete answer.

I am on the road right now and will respond when I return about 2/17.
I am not sure if this is the right author. A key scene in one of the
books is an opium war battle in Canton.
