I have a DELL Laptop with Windows 2000. I had configured the Power
Button so that when I hit it the computer goes into standby mode. Got
a letter from SBC DSL asking us to upgrade to SBC-Yahoo DSL. Did that
and now when I hit the standby button I get a dialog box that says:
"EnterNet PPPoE Device is not allowing the computer to standby. Driver
may have to be altered" I spent one hour with SBC DSL support staff on
phone and they made me uninstall the entire Yahoo! stuff and reinstall
the original SBC DSL drivers etc. but it still does not work.

Please advice a solution that will work. DSL is working fine,
everything works fine but computer is not going into standby mode. I
have also tried restarting the computer - everything works fine except
the standby mode from the power button.

Thanks

Microsoft has released a new update for Windows XP, which addresses a
rather small flaw that may prevent the computer from entering standby
or hibernation mode if a Direct3D-based screen saver is running.
Despite replacing two DirectX libraries and all the 3D screen savers
that have been shipped with Windows XP, this update does also replace
the winlogon.exe with an updated build.

Thanks for the comment dvdpro-ga. I appreciate it.

But I am using Windows 2000 and the Starfield Simulation Screen saver
that came with it. The standby was working fine for the last 1 year
and the problem started the same day that I updated to Yahoo! DSL from
my SBC DSL. That plus the PPPoE warning box that appears on hitting
standby makes me suspect that its to do with some DSL setting. Any
thoughts?

Thanks!

One thing you do not mention is if the DSL connection is actually up
or not when you try to go into standby.

Thanks for your query Jelte-ge!

If I switch on the laptop and without connecting to DSL during the
seesion, I hit the Standby button, the computer goes into standby
without any problem.

But if I have connected to DSL even once after switching on the
computer, then I am no longer able to go into standby mode. It does
not matter if the DSL connection is still on or if I have disconnected
first before hitting the standby button. In either case, I get the
PPPoE error message and a failure to go into standby.

Thanks
