Hello playwrightman-ga,

What is your operating system? Do you use a Mac or Linux or a PC with
Windows? What version of the software do you run (i.e. Windows XP,
etc.) What country are you in?

Thanks!

We are in the United Kingdom, running pc's on Windows 98. The error
message comes up on the printer itself though, so we're pretty sure
because of our enquiries that it is something to do with the machine
itself that we have to alter to get it up and running again. It is an
Epson Aculaser C8500 Model YCB-1.

Hope this helps.

Hi Playwrightman,

I emailed an Epson Customer Support Representative regarding your
query, "...Does anyone know what this means and how to fix it?", here
is the answer:

"The Error indicates malfunction on Belt Transfer Roller. Malfunction
may have been caused by toner waste scattered on this roller and can
be fixed by cleaning or needs replacment if its already worn out.

Kindly contact your dealer for support."

This means that the error doescome from the printer and so, no matter
what operating system you use, you will have the same error message.
What you can do is to find an Epson Service Center or go to your
dealer if it is still under warranty or a reliable printer technician
if the warranty is expired and have the roller cleaned or replaced if
necessary. You will have your printer up and running soon. I also
learned through further phone inquiry that the Belt Transfer Roller is
a major component in developing the printed image. It is exposed to
heat and may have reached it's maximum usability due to extensive use.

Hey Playwriteman,

I hadn't emailed support but did look online for an answer and came up
with a few things. Glad to see you've got an answer now. It was most
disturbing that Epson didn't have a list of Error messages on their
site and one actually had to contact their service dept for the
decoding of the error!

Here's what I'd come up with before the question was answered. Good
luck with this!

This is a bit hard to give a straight answer to since it needs
troubleshooting. I found the manual for this printer on the Epson UK
site but I don't see error E520 listed at all. Here is the link to a
PDF document for the printer's manual:

Setup Guide:
http://www.epson.co.uk/support/manuals/pdf/Laser/AcuLaser_C8500_Setup_Guide.pdf

Quick Reference:

Unpacking information:
http://www.epson.co.uk/support/manuals/pdf/Laser/AcuLaser_C8500_Unpacking_Guide.pdf

I did find a driver for it for Windows 98. I'd recommend installing
the driver as sometimes this can help tremendously. Here is the link
from Epson UK for their download library:

http://www.epson.co.uk/cgi-bin/epson-uk/lasdriveruk.pl

If for any reason the link does not work, just click on the logo to go
to the main site then click on Laser Printers, then use the drop down
box to locate the driver.

I'm wondering if maybe reinstalling all of the software might help?
It's something to try before spending money on repairs.

Here is the support page for Epson.co.uk. There are download libraries
here plus help from the company. They offer online chat support,
telephone and email support.

http://www.epson.co.uk/support/

"For telephone support in the UK, call our
Customer Inter@ction Centre on 0870 44 3 77 66"

I'm sorry I could not find anything definitive for you. I'm at a loss
as to where to look next if the Epson.co.uk manuals don't list the
error I'm left scratching my head in puzzlement.

Good luck, playwrightman-ga! I hope this info helps.
