I am trying to find a specific program I saw a very long time ago or
one that looks like it. I remember seeing this in computer stores on
computers for sale around 1986 or so. It looks like a 3d grid terrain
map. Very little graphics, just green or amber lines against a black
background giving the appearance of a 3d topo map. It appeared as if
the viewer were flying over hilly terrain. I am looking for the name
of this program, information about it, and to know whether there is a
screen saver I can get now for windows that emulates this program.

No; it's not the mars demo. It was a very simple graphics demo with
only one shade of green lines. The lines were spaced apart on flat
land about .5 inches. I think the computers were early IBM clones but
they might have been Commodores. Could have been 1988.

You might post a message in a discussion group specialized in old
computer games or in the 80's . You can use the Google Groups service
for locating the suitable groups.
Hope this help.

Your question sounds like an Easter Egg I remember from MS Excel 97.
I searched Easter Eggs and Excel and found this information:

Excel 97 (Excel 8)
Excel's 97's easter egg is the most impressive that I've ever seen.
Follow these steps:

Open a new workbook
Press F5
Enter X97:L97 and press Enter
Press Tab
Press Ctrl+Shift and click the Chart Wizard button on the toolbar.
You'll be greeted with a full-screen animated image. Use the mouse to
move around.

Trigger the egg. You'll be looking at a purple 3D landscape. Use the
mouse to "fly" over the landscape (the mouse changes direction, left
button moves forward and left button moves backwards). Fly around a
bit and you'll see a grey stone pyramid. Fly to the side of the
pyramid that's black and you'll see the credits scroll by.

NOTE: If this doesn't work, select the Tools Options command, then
click the Transition tab. Remove the checkmark from Transition
navigation keys and click OK. Then try it again.

Could it me the mars demo. It is similar to what you describe but it
came out in 1994. It was quite popular when it came out so it may
have used as display in a computer shop.

ftp://garbo.uwasa.fi/pc/show/mars10.zip

Could you give a bit more description. Were the lines a single shade
of green or were they varying shades. What kind of computers was this
program displayed on? Was it a PC? As circa 1986 PCs came with very
basic graphics.
