Hi kiranso-ga,

An in depth essay on the complex functions of the integumentary system
- the name for the skin and its appendages - is a very complex
assignment. As one of the articles puts it, "To assay an answer would
take a small textbook."

Instead of going into the details, I'll refer you to a few articles
where you'll find exactly what you are looking for. The information is
repeated in some, but that way if you don't get the concept the way
one is written, you'll catch it in the others.

An article that clearly explains the functions of the skin in detail
is located at:
http://www.terrebonnehigh.com/science/skin.htm

and an additional two that are extremely similar, but each has a
couple of facts that the other lacks:
http://members.tripod.com/vs8/skin.htm
http://steelseraphim.tripod.com/skin.htm

This article is much shorter than the others but has a couple of nice
drawings.

This is a combination of outline and explanation
http://www.apsu.edu/schillerj/Biology%202010/Ch_05.htm

This is a good outline of the functions of the skin.
http://itech.pjc.cc.fl.us/amorris/bsc1093/lct5ch05.PDF

and another very clear outline
http://ntas-k1.sv.vccs.edu/lisaback/integumentary.htm

This article offers an article that looks at the skin from the
viewpoint of the practicioner of Traditional Chinese Medicine.
http://www.bodhiwork.org/Articles/Border_Exchange.pdf

This series of articles from "Experimental Dermatology" stretch into
the latest that is known about what the skin does and how it manages
to perform all of it's tasks. This cutting edge research is really
amazing! It's not extremely technical, either.

Search terms: Integumentary system acid mantle

I think that should be enough to allow you to really understand the
incredible work that's going on all the time, literally, right under
your nose.

If you have any questions or need more information on any of this just
post a clarification and I'll fill in the details that you need.

Regards,
bcguide-ga
