Hello liberty-ga,
Your request for an exploration of the state of the industry for
entrepreneurship training centers led me to a broad range of resources
that I think will give you a lot to think about. The first challenge
was to develop the appropriate vocabulary to be able to find the
information you seek.
Entrepreneurship training and small business development training are
closely linked. In some of the resources I found the terms are almost
interchangeable. In addition, small business training /
entrepreneurship training has a long history of being allied with
government economic development and/or community development
initiatives. Many entrepreneurship training programs / centers are
sponsored or funded by special legislative initiatives. They may be
housed in community facilities, educational institutions or government
agencies. They may have special qualification requirements eligibility
for participation. I found that there are lots of Web resources to
help make sense of all these options.
Ive also been able to locate some research reports on the state of
entrepreneurial education. I didnt analyze these for you. Instead,
Im giving you the references and you can follow your own inclinations
for digging deeper. Im also including links to the universities and
foundations that have a special interest in entrepreneurship since
their Web sites offer a wealth of resources beyond entrepreneurial
training.
My research leads me to the conclusion that after reviewing the
materials Ive collected you might want to pursue additional research
on specific aspects of entrepreneurship training. My conclusions are
the entrepreneurship training is booming world wide. Training centers
are frequently sponsored by government agencies in alignment with
narrowly targeted community and economic development initiatives (i.e.
for women, minorities, specific technologies, etc.), by educational
institutions, non-profit organization and occasionally for-profit
companies. The goal of all of these entrepreneurial educational
programs is to help people start and grow new/small businesses. To
help make sense of the incredible tangle of programs there are lots of
Web sites to help the would-be entrepreneur.
I hope the research Ive collected will give you the starting points
for further study that youre looking for. Please ask for
clarification on any of this.
Good luck for your explorations.

EVOLVING CONVERSATIONS: A LOOK AT THE CONVERGENCE IN ENTREPRENEURSHIP
RESEARCH
ABSTRACT
This research presents an empirically grounded picture of the
converging conversations shaping the field of entrepreneurship. We
analyze the 13 593 references cited in the 752 papers published in the
FER Proceedings between 1981 and 1999. The results show that five
converging axes have been attracting entrepreneurship scholars over
time: research on personal characteristics of the entrepreneur, on
factors affecting new venture perfor-mance, on venture capitalists
practices and their impact on entrepreneurship, on the influence of
social networks, and research drawing from a resource-based
perspective.

Entrepreneurship development programs provide potential entrepreneurs
with the capital, training and technical assistance they need to
start-up and grow their business. Incubators are one of the many
initiatives used for entrepreneurship development, but programs also
include technical assistance, financing, legislation, marketing,
accounting and networking.

Entrepreneurship Education in American Community Colleges and
Universities
While historically, entrepreneurship training has existed only on the
fringes of academe, a growing number of community colleges,
universities and business schools in the United States now provide it
in several forms. Drury (1999) estimated that 1,500 institutions offer
credit courses in both entrepreneurship and small-business management
(p. 9). Unlike more traditional courses of study, the entrepreneurship
offerings at these institutions make up a more varied assortment of
classes and clubs, majors and co-majors, certificates and
concentrations, with just 100 institutions offering formal programs
(Dunn & Short, 2001, 1).

Economic Opportunity Act of 1964
The Economic Opportunity Act of 1964 (EOA) was the centerpiece of the
"War on Poverty," which in turn was a major thrust of the "Great
Society" legislative agenda of the Lyndon Johnson administration. The
EOA provided for job training, adult education, and loans to small
businesses to attack the roots of unemployment and poverty. Originally
coordinated by the Office of Economic Opportunity, many sections of
the EOA have been rescinded. However, other important segments have
simply been transferred within the federal government.
