What is the level of income for the top 1% and 5% of family incomes in
the San Francisco Bay Area (based on data no earlier than 2000)?

Hi,
It may be possible to strip this out of the Census 2000 data with a
lot of manipulation of the tables. In an attempt to avoid that, I've
emailed the Bay Area Census representatives and requested the
information from them. I'll let you know as soon as I get a reply.

As an FYI, before posing this question on Google, I spoke via email
and phone with the Census Bureau (USCB), Association of Bay Area
Governments (ABAG), Collaborative Economics, Joint Venture Silicon
Valley, and Economy.com.
You may have better luck with any or all of these sources, but know
that I have at least made initial inquiries here without getting the
~precise~ data I'm after.

You might be able to inquire this from Thomas Stanley, the author of
the book "Millionaire Next Door". He used a geodemographic method in
picking subjects to interview for the book, and that method may
include statistics like what you are looking for.

Hello,
I contacted the census bureau about this question. What they tell me
is this: income data is collected for a small subset of the overall
population and because of the small sample size, the 1% and 5% figures
you are seeking can't be reliably generated for a small population
like SF Bay. Income distributions are available for the country as a
whole, however, and possibly could be generated for larger
sub-populations (e.g. the entire state of California).
If you are interested in the national figures as an answer, let me
know.

In lieu of the Bay Area figures not being available, I would be
interested in the statewide and national figures for this question.
Thanks!
