In what is probably the only cool scene in Vanilla Sky, namely the
dream sequence where Tom Cruise is running through an empty Times
Square, there is some Indian-influenced music playing.

This isn't on the soundtrack, so where can I get it?

Hello Markabe.

The song is "From Rusholme With Love" by Mint Royale. You can get it
on Mint Royale's CD "On the Ropes."
Available from Amazon.com (see site for sound clip):
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005J9U4/

See this description in a listener's review on the same Amazon.com
page:
'I nearly winced the first time I heard 'From Rusholme With Love.' If
you've seen Vanilla Sky, you know the song because it played in the
unbelievable scene with Tom Cruise running through an empty Times
Square."

Also available from HMV Australia:
http://www.hmv.com.au/v4/product/rockpop.asp?sku=722903

Also see the review "The 10 best CDs you didn't hear in 2001" by Corey
Levitan:
"You'll recognize the song, 'From Rusholme With Love,' from its
fabulous use in 'Vanilla Sky's' deserted Times Square dream sequence.
Why it didn't make the soundtrack album is beyond me.)"

Additional verification that this is the right song from various
Usenet posts:

"In the first 5 minutes of the movie, where Tom Cruise is running
around a
deserted Times Square. The song is 'From Rusholme With Love' by Mint
Royale."

"It's from 'Mint Royale' and it is called 'From Rusholme With Love'.
Great track! :-)))"

search strategy: "vanilla sky", soundtrack, "times square"

I hope this helps.

juggler,

I'm thinking that I probably won't like Mint Royale's other tracks, so
I was wondering if there are any other CD's that contain that track,
like a compilation.

juggler,

One more thing before I stop hassling you.

I'm going to push my luck, just a little. There are certain songs that
can be legitimately downloaded from the internet. Is this song one of
them?

As good as pinkfreud's answers, and that's saying something.
