Hello vernita,
This happened in 1969: "The Ford Foundation gives $1 million to Morgan
State University, Howard University, and Yale University to help
prepare faculty members to teach courses in African American studies."

The same site has some information about the Ford Foundation, which
was established in 1936 by Henry Ford and his son, Edsel. "Since 1950,
after receiving the bulk of the estates of Henry Ford, his wife, and
Edsel, the foundation has engaged in broad philanthropic work... It
is one of the largest philanthropic trusts in the world. By 1998 it
had assets of about $9.5 billion, and disbursed approximately $517
million in grants. The foundation's stated goals are to strengthen
democratic values, reduce poverty and injustice, promote international
cooperation, and advance human achievement." It was the subject of a
congressional investigation, because its activities were seen as
controversial by conservatives. For example, in 1951, the Foundation
established the Fund for the Republic, focused on civil rights and
liberties.
