Question ID: 161396
My mouse cursor freezes in windowsXP Pro. I know the mouse works,
having tried it on another machine. However i continually get an error
mssage in the device manager that says it's loaded the drivers for the
device but it cannot find the hardware device. The mouse is a MS
Trackball Explorer. I've removed the device drivers and re-installed
them plugged and unplugged the mouse, in essence i've tried just
about everything, to no avail. Windows also loads a MS PS/2 Port
mouse each time i boot up. but says the same thing, "cannot find the
hardware device". I've tried the Microsoft Knowlege Base Article #
321122 but that did now solve the problem. I think i've tried
everything short of a complete re-install of windows XP . I would
rather not attempt that at this point.
So far the KB article is the closest i can find about this problem. I
will be glad to clarify this question. I need help finding other
areas to look for a solution.
thank you .

You confirm having performed many of the steps detailed in
the MSKB 321122 article, but do not say if you performed the
extensive registry edits outlined therein. Can you confirm?

Clarification of Question by jaisaii-ga on 16 Feb 2003 15:46 PST
Yes I have done all of the registry edits which are stated in the KB
article.
Further, I have unintalled SP1. I am now considering running a
"repair/install" of XP from the original disc. But I want to avoid
that if at all possible.
Hope this helps clarify for you.

I've done a 'repair/install' of winXP but I'm still without use of my
mouse. Still have the cursor frozen in the center of my screen. The
device manager lists the MS Trackball Explorer but with a BANG! that
says it loaded the drivers for this device but cannot find the
hardware device. And I'm back where I began.

SP1 has nothing to do with your problem. This is clearly a hardware
issue. You said that Windows also loads a MS PS/2 Port mouse each time
you boot up. If there are 2 mouse devices displayed in your device
manager, just remove the other one and reboot. If it still loads the
after you restart, disable it through it's properties then reboot.
Please confirm if this helps.

Yes there were two devices listed in the device manager, the ps/2 port
mouse, and the Trackball. However, i have tried disabling the ps/2
and it still re-appeared as 'disabled' when i rebooted. I tried those
things long ago to no avail. But this time after doing the
'repair/install' the ps/2 mouse did NOT show up. The trackball did
however, and it still says the device drivers were loaded but cannot
find the hardware device. I've uninstalled that and installed the
Intellipoint software, this time with the result that it loads the
intellipoint drivers but with the same 'cannot find hardware' error.
I've tried using the trackball with the USB/PS/2 adapter on the ps/2
port but it still says it can't find the hardware. I've plugged the
trackball using the adapter , into another computer and by default it
worked just fine as a 'normal' mouse. In a nutshell.... none of the
things mentioned here have worked to solve the problem as yet.

After running the "ip4_1engallmsi.exe" file containing the driver and
set-up files, look in the Program Files/Microsoft IntelliPoint
4.0/Mouse/SETUP directory and find oemsetup.exe. Running it actually
installs the IntelliPoint driver. Try that and let me know.

Yes I've tried that. No it didn't help. The mouse is still frozen.

Perhaps you've tried this also, let me know:

Go to this page on the Compusys IT site, and find where it says:

"Most often Windows automatically detects and sets up the hardware
device. You don't need to do anything other than confirm the setup.
In some cases, Windows cannot find the hardware device, and you must
set it up manually. To do so, select Add a new device from the
Add/Remove Hardware Wizard and then click the Next button. When
prompted to search for the new hardware, click No, I want to select
the hardware from a list and click the Next button."
http://www.compusysit.com.au/win2k.htm

Then continue with the instructions and manually install the mouse
and drivers. There are also instructions for using the Windows
Troubleshooter.

Yes I've tried that already, however since I'm running WindowsXP Pro
and not Windows 2000, the proceedure as outlined at that site is only
similar. Never the less, it did not solve the problem.
Unless I can get something new to try, it's looking like my next step
is going to be a fresh install of XP on a separate drive, and see if
perhaps there might be a problem with the mobo itself. But I
appreciate all your efforts thus far. I'll let you know if the fresh
install on the separage drive works or not. And we can go from there.
Again, thank you.

BTW....I'm not giving up on this man, I'm still looking for a solution
that won't involve setting up a whole new OS. So I'm holding off on
that untill this weekend. Maybe you can find something obscure we
haven't tried as yet.. hope so :)

Could be a nice bonus in it for ya !

I've done some additional research, but didn't find anything
other than what we've looked at so far. It may well be a
motherboard problem.

this might sound a bit weird but can u change the COM port on ur
modem. (or disable it If u have highspeed internet) and disable BOth
COM ports . and test it. (connect it with the PS/2 port)
also what IRQ is it useing . and what other devices are shareing the
IRQ?

Thanks Phi......
I tried your suggestion but it didn't do anything to help, i'm using DSL btw.
and the PS/2 is using IRQ 12.... no conflicts, and no sharing of the IRQ.
Thanks, it was one thing i don't think that we've tried yet :)

FOR sublime1

Yes sublime1 I'm begining to think it may very well be a mobo
problem.... which is why i'm going to attempt a fresh install of xp on
another drive, in order to isolate that.
I want to thank you for everything you've done to help and all of
your suggestions are most welcomed. I will be sure to let you know my
results as soon as i can, and hopefully with good news.
Thanks again for everything.

Sublime1.............

YAAAAAAAAAAAAY !! A fresh clean install of WinXP on a brand new drive
solved all my problems with the mouse. Apparently there was some
registry problem, and NOT a hardware/mobo problem.
So thank you and phi-ga for all your help. this problem is now
solved.
