The Public Record Office in Kew, London may have his details, particularly if your grandfather was wounded. However, as these records are not on-line, this will mean a personal visit, unless you can find an agent who can do the searches for you. Such agents do exist but I've no idea how to find one. Or what they charge. |

There are several Charles Vernons in the 1901 Census which is on-line at www.pro.gov.uk/ Middle names cannot be included in the searches but you could narrow it down if you know his approximate Date or Place of Birth. There's a charge after the initial search. |
