In order to drum up American support for Iraq during the Iran-Iraq war
of the 1980s, Saddam Hussein or the Iraqi government placed an
advertisement in the New York Times inviting displaced Iraqi Jews to
resettle, promising some sort of compensation as well. I'm looking
for the date and page number of the ad, as well as the text (if
possible). I believe it was placed sometime after 1985, but I am not
sure. Let me know if I can provide any more help.

I've located the date of the ad, but not the page number or text.
Would the date be acceptable?

A visit to a library that has the New York Times on microfilm might be
necessary in order to find the page number and text. However, it'd be
hard for a researcher to justify that sort of effort at the current $5
price level.

The date of the ad is fine. If you have any other information that
would help in locating it using microfilm, it would be appreciated.
Thanks a lot!

I just wanted to add that I'm referring to the section or general
region of the paper in terms of helping to locate the ad.

Hello.

According to the web site Eretzyisroel.org, Iraq's ad inviting
displaced Iraqi Jews to resettle appeared in the New York Times, Le
Monde and the Toronto Star on December 11, 1975.

"The Iraqi government underscored its invitation two weeks afterward,
with paid advertisements in selected newspapers around the world.
Readers of the New York Times, the Toronto Star, or Le Monde would
have found the ad difficult to overlook; in half-inch boldface
letters, 'Iraqi Jews' were 'invited to return to Iraq.'[3]
3. New York Times, Le Monde, Toronto Star, December 11, 1975."

As for finding the ad on the microfilm, I'd imagine that ad would be
in the first section of the newspaper. Usually, ads of this sort
(i.e., those designed to provoke or get maximum attention) are placed
in the first section. If you'd like to post another question at a
higher price level, I'd be willing to make a trip to a library to
track this down.

search strategy: "new york times", "iraqi jews"

I hope this helps.

Found what I was looking for despite the fact that I was about ten
years off in terms of date. Excellent research!
