Hello olaf,

I have done research on your question, and have found that becoming a
Telecontrol Technologist in BC usually involves "Three to four years
of on the job technical training and self-study with annual written
and practical exams."
Source: http://www.bchydro.com/careers/apprentice/apprentice3012.html

I contacted BC Hydro directly and was told that if there was a manual
or study guide for the exam, that Human Resources would be the place
to contact. Here is the phone number for Human Resources: 604-623-3789

Are you already in the apprenticeship program?

"First things first - finding a job with BC Hydro is key to
participating in an apprenticeship program. Your employer's
cooperation is required to complete an apprenticeship as a Telecontrol
Technologist. Applicants must have completed a National Diploma
Program in Electronics Engineering Technology from an accredited
institution, preferably with a Communications Option, usually a two
year program."

To gain certification: "The Telecontrol Technologist apprenticeship
process requires time spent learning on the job. A Telecontrol
Technologist apprentice must complete a five (5) year program
including 9,000 workplace hours of training. After completion of
training, a passing grade on exams will result in the BC Certificate
of Apprenticeship."
http://www.learnandearn.bc.ca/pls/trades/trade?tradeCode=0053&groupCode=electrical&selectContent=CERTIFICATION

As such, it appears that the exam will highly reflect the training
received during the five year program. This suggests that it is an
exam to test your knowledge and will provide you with various
situations to which you will have to respond to.

A Telecontrol Technologist is also referred to as a
"Telecommunications Installation and Repair Worker" according to:
http://www.workfutures.bc.ca/EN/def/occs/7246_e1.html

In addition, the telecontrol technologist program appears to be
administrated by this person/address:

Carole Dorward
BC Hydro HR Services
400 Madsen Road
Nanaimo, BC V9R 5M3

You might want to ask for this person directly if you phone BC Hydro
HR (604-623-3789). BC Hydro does appear to be the only place that
offers this certification, so any study guides would probably come
from them. Another suggestion would be to contact people who have
passed the examinations to see if they have copies of old exams, or
any advice on what to study. After numerous searches, I have not come
up with any books or guides that were specifically written to help
pass this exam.

I hope that the above information was the type of answer you were
expecting. I have sent out two emails and will let you know if I
receive a response. I hope that the contact information above will
help you find a study guide or manual and wish you the best in your
endeavors.

Please let me know if you need any clarifications regarding my
research for you.

A quick update:

I told you that I had sent two emails out... well I just received a
reply from one of them. It was a confirmation that my email had been
forwarded to a person within BC Hydro who would be able to help. I was
told that the person will contact me within two business days, so
hopefully by Tuesday I will have more information for you.

Thank you for your reply to my question. I am not a telecontrol tech
or a BC Hydro employee yet. I have graduated from a tech school with a
diploma in Telecommunications and have been working as an rf
technician for sometime. Im interested in employment with BC Hydro as
a telecontrol tech for a number of reasons. I have lived in BC for a
number of years (currently in Ontario) and miss it very much. Also I
was employed in a similar job providing maintenance on mountain top
repeaters, base stations and mobiles for a heli ski company. This is
the type of work I would enjoy getting up every morning for! I've
heard that there is an exam to write as part of the hiring process &
providing I get that far, I want to be prepared. Ive been out of
school for awhile. Thanks again, please let me know of any more tips.
