What was Katerina Von Bura's given religious name when she became a
Nun? She would be known by this name during her period as a
Cisgtercian Nun of the benedictine Order. It was common to take the
name of a Saint. I cannot find any information on any listings under
her name of Martin Luther, her husband.

Hi ejc2295-ga,

I emailed 'Katharina von Bora Anniversary', die Lutherin from this website:
http://www.lutherin.de/engl.html

and I got the following response,

Quote:

"Hi,
the custom of changing ones name when entering a convent dates back to late
antique times when people had still pagan names. In late middle ages people
had normally christian names so there was no necessity to change it. When
Luther entered the convent in 1505 he became Brother Martinus. And the same
is true for Catharina von Bora (not Bura). In the records of the convent of
Nimbschen she is called by her Christian name as in Luther's list printed
after the escape of the nuns in 1523. Indeed there is an old tradition that
the students in Wittenberg made fun of her name, calling her St. Catharina
after the learned Catharina of Alexandria.
Martin Treu"

and the email response was from:
Martin.Treu@MartinLuther.de

I hope this helps.

Best Regards

Thanks for your effort. I had planned on calling Germany; I looked at
the same site but didn't scroll down to the provided e-mail address.

Hi there!

There is plenty of information about Luther's wife, in books and on
the internet. I used a biography of Martin Luther to learn that many
authorities prefer the spelling "Katharina von Bora" (you will find
many, many web pages using Bora and Luther as your search terms).
Most agree that very little is known about her before her marriage,
though what is known makes interesting reading. She is quite well
known after her marriage, and there is some agreement about her life
before and in the Convent Marienthron in Nimbschen (near Grimma)- but
so far I have found no record of her religious name.

Will keep trying. Good luck!

Hello,

I have searched the net and numerous references but none of them have
her given name as a Cistercian Nun.

I will try to find the convent telephone number in Germany if it still
exists.

Thanks for helping.

Regards, Ed

I browsed through a couple of biographies on Martin Luther, but didn't
find anything about the name she used in the convent. Read2live-ga's
quite right, but there are many variations on her name, even in the
books. There's at least one biography of her out there and at least
one fictionalized account of her life. How accurate those are, I don't
know. Good luck!
