Henry O. Pollak has been quoted to the contrary, stating "There is no real distinction between pure mathematics and applied mathematics. There is only a difference between good mathematics and uninteresting mathematics." http://www.ams.org/employment/chung.html However, Peter Gould did comment that "Far from mathematical structures being created for their own sake, and then being applied to areas of scientific inquiry, the weight of evidence is for exactly the reverse."
