The main players in the database software industry right now are IBM
Corp., Oracle, and Microsoft with SQL Server.
According to the IT advisory firm Gartner Dataquest and published in
the May 7, 2002 article of Information week by Rick Whiting, IBM is
now the market leader with 34.6%. This is mainly to its acquisition of
Informix. Oracle comes in second with 32%. Oracle however leads in the
