We have several ideas for home improvements to make better use of space and improve appearance. What kind of professional would be best to work with to help clarify a more concrete plan. Should we talk to a GC, an architect, a builder, or what? What are the pros and cons of each. |

Hi boogles-ga, I was doing some research and making some contacts and this is what I came up with as the best advice. Architects are expensive and I do not think that they is the route that you want to take. The Contractor is the most likely person to hire. They subcontract the work out to other persons. They have their own draftsmen, plumbers, electricians, architects, builders, masons etc. They act as an overseer to make sure that the work is done properly. If you intend to move walls or do any major structural changes then the Contractor is the person you will need as they will be required to provide drawings, have their engineer look at the place etc. Most builders will not do renovations. Another one is the Home Improvement specialist, they are a bit cheaper but in general you first have to check out each company with the Better Business Bureau and with the Chamber of Commerce to ensure that there is no complaint against them and how long are they in business and operating under the same name. As some companies change names because of complaints against them. Also get photos of the jobs that they have done from start to finish and go get references from those persons This is not alot of information but I hope that this helps alittle. If you have any other quesitions please contact me. home improvement specialist http://www.umass.edu/bmatwt/publications/pdf_files/decking_market.pdf http://srd.yahoo.com/S=2766679:WS1/R=5/K=architects+vs+contractors/H=0/T=1045563620/F=23398c1c6f053bf5af35d34beae6b024/*http://www.seamlesslawweb.com/Owners,%20Architects%20&%20Contractors/Owners,%20Architects%20&%20Contractors.PPT http://www.masonrymagazine.com/9-02/contracting.html http://www.primebuilders.net/ http://www.homeimprovement.com.sg/ http://www.forhomeimprovement.com/ http://classifieds.buildfind.com/texis/vx/search/+Owx_qo7woDBoDtmBm6eE2HIwwwq/classified.html http://www.abc.org/fac/facmain.cfm http://www.home-builders.com/ Hope this helps. jeanwil-ga |
