NASA has been engaged in research in the growing of plants in space since its founding in the 1950s. From the 1970s onward, when the establishment of bases on the moon and Mars was first planned seriously, NASA has been investigating the use of plants as part of the Advanced Life Support System, in which plants would be used to provide food, waste management, and oxygen production. There is plethora of information from NASA Web sites, too many links to list. Some of the more informative sites are: JSC [Johnson Space Center] Advanced Life Support Web Page http://ADVLIFESUPPORT.JSC.NASA.GOV/ Includes a link to a .pdf of a proposed Mars greenhouse.
