Dear ferrofluidman-ga
I have found a patent which refers to the first ferrofluids being made
by NASA in 1963. The patent number is given - registered Nov 1965. The
patent image cannot be viewed on-line at the moment (may be temporary
fault). Is this the patent you are seeking or a later one?

Dear ferrofluidman-ga,

I accessed the United States Patent and Trade Mark Office search page
on http://www.uspto.gov/patft/
Unfortunately the full text of Patents are not available on line
before 1976 and searching is limited to number and classification.

However, I refer you to United States Patent 4,329,241 Massart May 11,
1982. In the claim section the following is stated:
“The first ferrofluids were made in the laboratories of the NASA round
about 1963 (see U.S. Pat. No. 3,215,572) by grinding ferrite for
several weeks in the presence of kerosene or oleic acid.”
http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO2&Sect2=HITOFF&u=/netahtml/search-adv.htm&r=13&f=G&l=50&d=PALL&p=1&S1=(ferrofluid+AND+nasa)&OS=ferrofluid+AND+nasa&RS=(ferrofluid+AND+nasa)

I have tried to access the images of Patent No. 3,215,572 but it will
not show. Perhaps it will work when you access it.
http://patimg2.uspto.gov/.piw?docid=US003215572&PageNum=1&&IDKey=F8A86DD952A6&HomeUrl=http://patft.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-Parser?Sect1=PTO1%2526Sect2=HITOFF%2526d=PALL%2526p=1%2526u=/netahtml/srchnum.htm%2526r=1%2526f=G%2526l=50%2526s1=3215572.WKU.%2526OS=PN/3215572%2526RS=PN/3215572

According to Patent 4,027,494, 3215572 was registered November 1965 by
Papell, and is linked to 3295545 Nov 1967 by Papell et el.

“Phase separation systems for liquid storage tanks in zero gravity
environments, such as in U.S. Pat. No. 3,295,545, have in the past
relied on a colloidal suspension of magnetic particles, such as those
described in U.S. Pat. No. 3,215,572, in the liquid. The particles
were attracted by magnets so that the liquid was retained in the tank,
while permitting venting of the gas. However, the colloidal suspension
of particles increased the complexity and expense of preparation of
the liquid to be used. “

If none of the above links work go to the main search page at the top
and type in the Patent numbers.

I trust this answers your question as the contents of the patents are
out of my area of knowledge. Please do ask for clarification of this
research, or if the links do not work before rating the answer.

I think this might help

That is even better. I had read that the invention was made in 1967,
but if the first patent was in 1963, that is the one I am interested
in. I need the number so I can get a copy of the patent for a patent
application that I am filing.

Thank You
