Question ID: 162472
I live in London, England. I have recently been referred for a
neurosurgical consultation, following an MRI scan which in the opinion
of my doctor indicates that I will probably require cervical spine
surgery. I am anxious to see (and, if it comes to that, be operated on
by) someone with a high reputation in this field. Although I don't
have medical insurance I am prepared to pay privately if necessary to
see the best available. How can I find out who are the acknowledged
leaders in the
field within the UK, who has the best record in terms of surgical
outcomes, etc?

Dear Daniel948,

I think you'll find that just as many cervical vertebrae procedures
are carried out by orthapaedic surgeons as by neurosurgeons. I would
take this int account when evaluating any reply. Best of luck with
your surgery.

Dear Daniel948,
my wife has in the last year undergone orthapaedic surgery and brain
surgery so we have experience of both. Her spine was operated on by Mr.
Will Burgoyne at the Middlesex Hospital in central London. He is highly
regarded as is the man he replaced at the Middlesex Mr.Mike Edgar. He
is now retired from the NHS but still operates privately and is
recognised as a leading expert on the spine.{Will Burgoyne was a
temporary replacement for Mike Edgar and now has a permanent position
at a hospital in Epsom}My wife's brain surgery was carried out at the
National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery Queen Square,Central
London by Professor H A Crockard who is a world renowned expert in his
field being one of only two surgeons in the world to carry out a
particular proceedure on the upper spine.Best of luck and hope
everything is ok.Leeroger.
