I am pretty sure it is not a translation, though, of course, can't be
absolutely certain. It was a poem which we read when I was in high
school, about 60+ years ago and I liked it so well that I have
remembered the first verse all these years. I had the impression it
was by a woman poet, e.g., Edna St. Vincent Millay or Emily Dickenson;
over the years I have looked through all their works I have found with
no success, and had about given up when it occurred to me to try
Google. don schwartz

This line sounds a bit like Walt Whitman to me, but I haven't been
able to track it down.
