I am running a Windows 2000 network with Active Directory integrated DNS. I use DNS forwarding and Earthlink handles my DNS records. Earthlink also handles our web site as well as providing mail service for us. We run MS Outlook as our email clients. Up until recently we were using mail.earthlink.net as our pop3 server. Earthlink upgraded our email and now we are supposed to use a pop server that corresponds to our domain name. Example pop.mycompany.com The problem is that I cannot reach pop.mycompany.com. I have created a host record in my DNS that maps the correct ip address to pop.mycompany.com. I can use nslookup to find that address. I cannot however tracert the address from inside my network. I can tracert the server from samspade.org and I can get into our pop server using the Earthlink web mail program. I have my client side DNS resolvers setup to use the internal DNS server. I am pretty certain that I have my forwarding setup correctly considering that I have had no real DNS problems before. I cannot figure this out and Earthlink is sure it is a problem on our network. Thanks Phillip |

Try to use the IP address of pop.mycompany.com on the local client. This will bypass DNS and possibly solve the problem. |

Dear pg3phillip-ga: I am posting this as a comment because I have no real way of knowing what your configuration is. I assume that if it works (and I hope it does) that you will let me know so I can go ahead and close your question: Go to OUTLOOK Find TOOLS (at the top of the application). Now click on TOOLS. A menu will drop down. Find ACCOUNTS and click on it. If your default email address (username) is not already highlighted, highlight it. Now click on the button that says PROPERTIES. Now click the tab that says SERVERS. Make sure that the field that says: My incoming mail server is a ____ server says POP3 in that field. If it doesnt, change it so that it does. Now, just below that is this field: Incoming mail (POP3). Make sure this field says POP3.yourdomain.com If it does not, change it. Just below that is: Outgoing mail (SMTP). It should say: mail.yourdomain.com If it does not, change it. Make sure your account name and your password are correct. Its wise to retype them just in case there is an error. Keep in mind that if your username and password also changed, you will need to change them to whatever your new server will recognize as prescribed by your service. The username is usually the name that your email is being sent to. For example, if your email address is Bob@yourdomain.com, the username in this field should be Bob. Now retype your password. Click the button that says APPLY. Now click the button that says OK. It would be wise to restart your computer now. When it comes back online, try your email and see if you get anything. If you dont, send an email to yourself, wait a few minutes for the server to process it, and check for new mail again. I believe this will work for you. If it does, please let me know. cambus-ga Thanks for the comment but I can't tracert the server using the ip address. I gave your suggestion a shot but it didn't work tutuzdad-ga Thanks for the comment. I have checked and rechecked my Outlook configuration. I have about 7 folks using Outlook and prior to the e-mail upgrade we had no trouble. Just to be sure however I checked the configuration again. Outlook is configured correctly. I think the problem has more to do with DNS than anything else but I may be wrong. |

arimathea-ga I am unable to open a connection on port 110 to pop.mycompany.com I don't mean to second guess you but this isn't a firewall issue because I can telnet to port 110 on mail.earthlink.net with no problem. Earthlink support staff have successfully opened a telnet connection to pop.mycompany.com on port 110 from outside our network. Thanks for your comment |
