Hello Neilss-ga and thank you for your question.

I believe the cartoon you are referring to is Q.T. Hush. Here is a
description of Q.T. Hush from the Yesterland website:

“Private eye Q.T. Hush was a detective with something extra. His
shadow seemed to have a mind and body of its own. The shadow, named
Quincy, was able to talk, slide under doors, and even smoke cigars,
making Q.T. a very effective sleuth. His faithful dog Shamus also
assisted the investigator, sniffing clues while decked out in his own
deerstalker cap. Like most private detectives, Q.T. had a love/hate
relationship with the local police, in this case Chief Muldoon.

(..)

Q.T. Hush has inexplicably disappeared from television since the 60’s,
but it is still remembered fondly by the kids who watched it.”

Q. T. Hush premiered in syndication on September 24, 1960.

“The 100 three-and-a-half-minute cartoons were produced by M. and A.
Alexander for Animation Associates and was distributed by National
Telefilm Associates. The cartoons originally aired on stations such
as WABC-TV, New York, where they aired as a half-hour series Monday
through Friday at 6:30 PM and again weekday mornings on The Tommy
Seven Show hosted by Ed Bakey and featuring other cartoons such as
Courageous Cat and Minute Mouse.”

There are a number of screen shots of Q.T. Hush that you may wish to
see at the Toon Tracker – Finder of Lost Cartoons Website.

“Q.T. Hush is a diminutive private eye with a cowardly bloodhound
partner named Shamus and a mysterious 'assistant" named Quincy.
Together they take on the tough cases that the police can't cope
with...like the theft of the Statue of Liberty."

Wow, Bobbie, thanks! I believe this is exactly the cartoon I remember
- 1960 would have been about right! But I never found any references
to it anywhere, and I started to wonder if I'd made it up! Thanks
again!
