I have light beige/sand colored carpet in my house that is badly
stained in high-traffic areas. It is almost 10 years old but it is
still good carpet.
The carpet is solid colored and smooth, not sculptured or berber.
Is it possible to have a professional come in and dye my existing
carpet so that I do not have to replace it? And if so, who performs
such a service?

Hello mrsj,

Thank you for your question.

I searched [carpet +dying] and found informative questions and answers
about these services for you:

At DoItYourself.com, a question about dying carpet is posed:
http://doityourself.com/archives/Flooring_171.htm

"This may be a really dumb question, but does anyone know if
it is possible to dye wall-to-wall carpeting? I have a
light beige carpet that is fairly new, but is stained. I've had it
professionally cleaned, but once it dried the stains were very
noticeable. I've never heard of anyone dying carpet,
but if someone has done it, I'd like to hear how it was done.

Answer:

Polyester carpet cannot be dyed. Carpet made from wool or
nylon or a blend of both can be dyed. Some other types of
carpet can be dyed (acrylic, olefin and other synthetic
blends) but should be tested first.

Want carpet dye? Know that these products are not
inexpensive."

At SpotsandStains Facts:
http://www.spotsandstains.com/faq.html

"If I got tired of the color of my carpet, could I have it dyed a
different color?

Unfortunately, dying carpet is not like taking a trip to the hair
salon to dye our hair. The color of your carpet determines the color
our technicians can dye your carpet.

 What is your guarantee?

All of our work is quality work and is 100% guaranteed. If we can't
fix your problem, we don't charge. It's that simple.

How long will it take to dye my carpet?

A room of average size take about an hour or two. A larger room will
of course take longer. A whole house might take a full 24 hours.

What type of carpets can be dyed?

Not all carpet can be dyed. When the technician arrives to give you
your estimate, he'll perform a simple test to make sure your carpet is
able to be dyed.

Should I have my carpet cleaned before it can be dyed?

Absolutely not! Your carpet will be cleaned and dyed at the same time.

Will the color come out if I clean it or will it rub off onto socks
and shoes?

No, our colors are guaranteed permanent."

And Dr. Dye has this to say about the process:
http://www.drdye.com/

The alternative to carpet replacement

Make your drab, sun-faded or stained carpet look like new again!

Dr. Dye's method of restoring lost color in carpet has proven itself
in the market place.

The materials are the same high quality natural dyes used in carpet
mills today, and the finished product is durable and cost effective.

We can even change colors in most cases!

In today's economy dying carpet has become a major option for saving
money and making carpet look great.

Carpet dying can give you many more years of wear and beauty without
the cost and hassle of replacement.

Costs:

Only nylon and wool carpets can be dyed and the average cost to clean
and dye carpet is 50 cents/square foot, but the bigger the job, the
better the price per sq. foot.

So, we know that this process is available and at least some clients
are very happy with the results as shown on some of the sites above.
All that is needed now is to find carpet dyers near you!

I searched [carpet +dyers] to find numerous hits of companies that
offer this service. Since you did not mention where you are located, I
tried a few sample searches to see if local trades would be found:

["carpet dyers" +california] produced 127 hits and good leads to these
services.

Narrowing further, for example to ["carpet dyers" +sacramento],
produced no usable hits. So, I grabbed my local yellow pages to find a
section for "Carpet, Rug and Upholstery Dyers". There were three to
choose from, and there may be more or less in your local directory
depending on the size of your community.

So, replicate my search for your state, city or area and also check
your yellow pages to find these services and see if your carpet can be
successfully dyed.

I trust my research will help your carpet regain its appearance. If a
link above should fail to work or anything require further
explanation, please do post a Request for Clarification and I will be
pleased to assist further.

Regards,
