Most of the fonts the begin with the red letter "A" display as boxes
of varying sizes. This includes software that uses these fonts,
viewing them in the fonts folder, and looking at these fonts on a CD
on this machine. I copied the fonts folder from another machine to
CD, and when you look at it on this machine, boxes! The OS is ME (I
know,,,,) Thanks for your help.

Hello stevemichaels,

Are these TrueType or Raster fonts? If not, you should follow these
instructions:

Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then
double-click Fonts.
On the File menu, click Install New Font.
Open the folder that contains the font you want to add, and then click
the font you want to add. Note that you can select more than one font
to add at a time by pressing and holding down the CTRL key while you
click fonts.

If this does not work, you should also try restarting your computer
into Safe Mode (to rebuild the font cache). You can do this by
pressing F8 while your computer is booting up. You can check if there
is a difference in safe mode and then boot back into Windows normally

Also how many fonts are you copying over? Windows ME has limits to the
number of fonts that can be used. You might want to try copying one or
two and see if they will work.

You might also want to try visiting http://windowsupdate.microsoft.com
and downloading any updates that are available for you, especially
video drivers.

Please let me know through a clarification if the situation is
resolved. If not, please give me the name of some of the fonts and I
will see what I can come up with.

Hi Tisme,
I have already done the font install routine with no change. The
problem is not with any specific font, just those with the .fon
extension. Funny thing, I can look at the fonts on the ME computer
and see the boxes, if I look at the CD with the fonts I copied from my
laptop on any other machine they look fine. Another symptom-when I
bring up some of my software, I see the same boxes where there should
be text. A prime example, I just downloaded the new MSN Messenger and
see the boxes instead of text in the "Sign in" box. Instead of
displaying "Sign In" all I get is "0000 00" (zeros replacing boxes.)

It seems that all the .TTF fonts display OK, just the raster fonts are
replaced by the boxes. Additionally, safe mode displays the same
thing. Total number of fonts installed is about 500, well under the
1000 limit I have heard applies to ME.

Thanks for trying to help, and I look forward to hearing your
response.

Steve

Hello stevemichaels,

What is the operating system you are successfully using these fonts
with? Is either of these computers a non-English version of Windows?

Can you please tell me what video card you have? I think we should try
updating the video card driver as it is the next most obvious
solution.

Can you also please try to print out text that appears as boxes on
your screen with a text editor such as Notepad to see if the letters
come out, or if it prints just boxes?

I will continue to research your problem and look forward to your
response.
