Hi!
I need to know the breakdown of internet usage in the UK. I.E. What
percentage of people go online during the day vs. what percentage go
online at night- office work usage vs. at-home usage. This shouldn't
be all that hard to find.
Thanks!
Chelsea

Hello chezleigh-ga,

I have the breakdown of the percentage of internet users at home, at
work, at an academic institution, at a friend, relative or someone
else’s house, at home via a digital TV, at an Internet café or kiosk
and via a mobile phone/device.

This is information for the year 2002 in the UK.

There isn’t any information on the percentage of users that go online
at night or during the day. Perhaps it’s because of the broadband
connections that provide permanent Internet connections.

However I do have data on the:
- Amount of hours that users go online per week.
- Percent of internet users by region
- Usage by working status
- Websites visited per week

Would you be interested in this information?

Thanks
Bobbie7-ga

Hi Chelsea and thank you for your question!

The number of adults in the UK who have access to the Internet is 19
million people. This is the highest figure ever recorded in the annual
Internet survey.”
Annual Internet Survey 2002

The complete Annual Internet Survey for the year 2002 can be
downloaded here:
http://www.which.net/surveys/survey2002.pdf

“Four in five users surf the net from the comfort of their own home.

The importance of the office as a point of access has actually
diminished slightly, as most newcomers to the net are home users.

Approaching three in ten (27%) surfers now have access at work, a drop
from last year’s figure of 35%. Seventeen percent of Internet users
have the option of using the Internet at home or at work.

The importance of academic institutions as providers of Internet
access should not be overlooked. Although only one in ten surfers
(11%) use such facilities, almost a quarter (23%) of those under 35
who are currently online rely on the services offered by schools,
colleges and universities.”

Internet connectivity - November 2002 - United Kingdom

“The number of Internet subscribers continued to increase in November
2002. Dial-up connections continued to fall whilst permanent
connections continued to increase in November 2002. Permanent
connections also continued to increase their share of the total of all
Internet subscriptions.

(..)

Permanent connections made up 9.3 per cent of total subscriptions in
November 2002, up from 8.5 per cent in October. This increase in the
market share is due to a fall in the price of broadband technology.

(..)

In November 2002, the percentage of subscriptions using free
access remained at 26 per cent. Those paying a fixed rate for
unmetered access decreased to 37 per cent. At 18 per cent and
5 per cent respectively, there was no change in the percentage
of subscriptions using billed access or a mixed plan (fixed rate
plus calls). ‘Always-on’ subscriptions rose to 6 per cent whilst the
percentage using ‘Other’ remained at 8 per cent.”
