who owns certain copyright to a specific book title?
Title in question is 'Rebel Women' by Evelyn Sharp (British female

Book first published 1910 by 'John Field' London
Author died 1954...believed no estate and no heirs....need to verify
if this title is NOT protected by copyright right owners.

Clarification of Question by midimusomike-ga on 20 Feb 2003 04:38 PST
For clarification: I would need to know the specifc ( and not general)
copyright circumstances for this title ( am aware of varying copyright
laws in US and UK) in both USA and UK...IE WHo owns the rights in UK
and USA?

Thanks.

Dear midimusomike,

Here is the specific copyright information regarding Evelyn Sharp.

"HRC Watch: Writers, Artists and their Copyright Holders:
Adminstration of the estate of Evelyn Sharp, under her married name of
Evelyn Jane Nevinson, was granted to her niece Joan Sharp
(administration London, 6 October 1955), despite the presence of a
will with different instructions. The will divides the residuary
estate between members of the Sharp and Nevinson families, but it may
be that administration of the estate was granted because so many of
the beneficiaries had predeceased Evelyn Sharp. The will specifically
bequeathes all copyrights and royalties of both Evelyn Sharp and Henry
W. Nevinson to Barbara Ayrton Gould. Barbara Ayrton Gould, however,
died in October 1950. Her son and sole heir was Michael Ayrton (see
the WATCH entries for Gerald Gould, Barbara Ayrton Gould and Michael
Ayrton)."

Given the fact that Michael Ayrton died in 1975, one would need to
find out who were the beneficiaries of his will. It is very possible
that Michael Ayrton Productions Ltd. still holds the copyright to
Evelyn Sharp's books.

I hope this helps - I'll be happy to post this as an answer if it
satifies your request.

Thank you,

A highly professional, information filled, detailed reply which also
was returned in remarkably good time. I have sought this information
for some weeks, for my studies, and within one hour of posting I had
SO much comprehensive and detailed information as to complete my
project on time.
I am indeed indebted, beyond the mere cost of the payment, which was a
good buy, indeed.

Copyright lasts for 70 years from death of author.

Under English Law, if author dies intestate and without any family
relatives who would be entitled to inherit under the rules of
intestacy, then the estate passes to the Crown.

(That's my understanding, as a non-lawyer)

Hi,

Many thanks for that, I'm aware of the particular ruling.....but need
to determine if this IS the case with this specific title.
That, per se, is the basis of my question: Who IS the rights owner?

Cheers for your input!
