The most-recent government data is from the 1997 Economic Census
(actually released in 2000 and 2001) but it is very detailed. You can
search for the number and size of manufacturers by industry; by state;
by county; by metropolitan area; and by Zip Code.
The 2002 Economic Census was mailed in December, with a deadline for
return of Feb. 12, 2003, so it will be a while before data is
compiled.

You may find Census Bureau pages with NAICS (what we used to know as
SIC) codes useful in identifying where electronics manufacturers are
listed. The NAICS code for computer and electronic product
manufacturing is 334 - - but use of electronics has broadened so
widely that you may wish to electrical equipment/appliance/component
manufacturing as well:

The detailed report on NAICS 334, Computer and Electronic Product
Manufacturing, is in an Adobe Acrobat file and starts on page 24 of
the Acrobat document:

I know that youd originally asked about international data too.
Industry associations are almost always country-specific, making it
difficult to get collective international information.
And each country reports data in a different fashion. Even Canada
doesnt make it easy to break out the number of electronic
manufacturers (at least without a fee):
