Setting up a NT based LAN is not that hard...

What exactly do you mean by "responsibilty for their own
areas"?

Hi! Thanks for the question.

Intranets are simply a group of interconnected computers within a
business or organization. Unlike the Internet, which is public,
Intranets can be private and only accessible to authorized people.
Only authorized computers can connect to the Intranet of an
organization. So from this idea Intranets can indeed simple and cheap
to setup whether based on Windows NT or any other platform.

You will generally need the following products to set-up an Internet.
The actual products will depend on your requirements and may not be
all covered by the enumeration listed below. I also included the links
to Epinion.com so that you could compare prices.

a.	Two or more computers (one computer will serve as a server)
b.	Hubs (http://www.epinions.com/cmhd-Networking-Hubs-All-63805569-Hub)

c.	Network cards
(http://www.epinions.com/cmd-review-DDF-A2495AC-3963704F-prod4)

d.	Printers (http://www.epinions.com/cmhd-Printers-All)
e.	Firewalls: If connected to the Internet or the Intranet is
relatively large. (http://www.epinions.com/cmhd-Networking-Routers-All-65247361-Firewall)
f.	Software like web development tools, antivirus, database and
others. (http://www.epinions.com/cmsw-Software-All-Internet-Software)

People have indeed to be responsible in taking care of their computer
workstations but there must still be an over-all network administrator
who shall set the rules and your group can depend on when something
goes wrong.

It is probably my fault so let me expand - we have a NT based LAN, we
have websites, we even publish dynamic content to a website, we have a
large number of shared folders on the LAN. What we are missing are a
slick front end to this information and a simple way for each
department to publish to their own little bit of this intranet that
links into the whole structure and also creates a structure within
their area.
For the purpose of this question you can assume we have all the
hardware you would want, competent network administrators and a
knowledge of web page creation. What I am looking for is a simple
recommendation of "download xyz-intranet builder which is free from
www.xyz.com, install on the server and Robert is your aunt's husband."

Thanks Tim
