Question ID: 165565
Where is the moon rock returned by the six apollos and the Soviet Luna probes
now resident around the world?

Request for Question Clarification by easterangel-ga on 22 Feb 2003 06:37 PST
Hi mongolia-ga! I have found the official storage facilities for moon
rocks gathered in the Apollo missions but could not find anything on
the Soviet Luna probe. I have however the name of the Russian who once
sold a sample of a moon rock at an auction. I could give you the name
from an article I read.

Would a the official storage facilities of NASA moon rocks be enough
as a legitimate answer.

Of course there might be other private individuals possessing them
sice anybody specially schools could ask for samples at NASA. Tracking
theam would be rather difficult.

Just let me know. :)

Dear Easterangel
Thank you for your very fast initial reply :-)
I am actually rather surprised that considering the sheer value of
this stuff, any of it would be put up for Auction to private
individuals especially the Soviet moon rock which constituted a much
smaller volume then that returned by the Apollo space program.

I can only assume that it is spread around various Musuems and
research centres throughout the world. I would have thought NASA and
the Russian Space Agency
would have a precise record of both the amount (by weight) and
location of the
moonrock returned. THis is what I am looking for.
Kind Regards
 Mongolia

Hi again mongolia-ga! I will give you an exerpt of an article as to
how difficult tracking them would be all around the world.

"Some moon rocks have slipped legally out of NASA’s grasp. President
Richard Nixon gave away 92 rocks, each weighing about 1 gram or one
thirtieth of an ounce, to several heads of state."

Source: Reuters 1994 report

This was just from President Nixon.

Again I found citings to official storage facilities (NASA) only and
some reports request or selling in auction but no contact number.

Taking into consideration such facts would citings of this recognized
official locations be enough for an answer?

Thanks.

Many pounds of moon rocks have also been stolen:

I have found the location of the "known" and "accounted for" specimens
if you are interested in that as an answer.

Dear mongolia-ga;

Thank you for allowing me an opportunity to answer your interesting
question.

“Between 1969 and 1972 six Apollo missions brought back 382 kilograms
(842 pounds) of lunar rocks, core samples, pebbles, sand and dust from
the lunar surface. The six space flights returned 2200 separate
samples from six different exploration sites on the Moon. In addition,
three automated Soviet spacecraft returned important samples totaling
300 grams (approximately 3/4 pound) from three other lunar sites. The
lunar sample building at Johnson Space Center is the chief repository
for the Apollo samples. The lunar sample laboratory is where pristine
lunar samples are prepared for shipment to scientists and educators.
Nearly 1000 samples are distributed each year for research and
teaching projects.”
LUNAR SAMPLES
http://www-curator.jsc.nasa.gov/curator/lunar/lunar.htm

Here is the known inventory:

Currently, NASA has control over 711 pounds of lunar rocks and soil
samples stored in various military vaults as mentioned above.

Twenty-four pounds of lunar rocks are currently loaned out to schools
and museums for display purposes.

Twenty-two pounds of moon rocks have been destroyed in government
sanctioned laboratory experiments.

Over the years, the Presidents have given heads of foreign states 0.6
pounds of moon rocks as gifts.

Seven pounds of moon rocks have been used in laboratory experiments
but not totally destroyed.

And 0.078 pounds of lunar rocks have been “lost” and are unaccounted
for.

* As for the Soviet samples, there is no way to know for certain what
became of them. Assuming that their scientists also wanted to perform
as many tests as possible on the samples they obtained, and
considering that the United States destroyed 24 lbs of the stuff in
tests we performed, it would not be out of bounds to assume that all
of their samples had been destroyed during testing. After all, they
only had three-quarters of a pound to begin with.

------------------------------------------------------------

In 2002, a group of students working/studying at Johnson Space Center
in Houston, Texas, loaded a 600 lb. Safe “full” of the specimens into
their SUV and fled with it. They were later arrested and authorities
believed that got all the specimens back. Their statements though lead
one to believe that this may not be the case and that the reported
volume of unaccounted for rocks may be larger than has been publicly
reported. Consider this article and these statements:

USATODAY
http://www.usatoday.com/news/nation/2002-07-23-moon-rocks_x.htm
“A 600-pound safe full of moon rocks and meteorites was stolen from
the Johnson Space Center in Houston…”

It doesn’t say how many of the specifies are rocks and how many are
meteorites. We know that meteorites are quite heavy as they have high
iron content, but 600 pounds is quite a lot of rocks nevertheless. The
article goes on to quote sources as saying:

“The samples were displayed Monday in the Tampa FBI office in the
green and white tackle box and small blue suitcase that brought them
to Florida.”

It doesn’t mention how large these containers are, but it is only
common sense to suggest that one cannot put 600 pounds of ANYTHING
other than gold, lead or mercury in a tackle box and a small suitcase.
Since we don’t really know how many of these specimens are moon rocks
and how many are meteorites, we have to assume that they are telling
the truth. Finally, one source in the article says this:

"Right now we're comfortable that we've recovered all of them…"

Note that he says “we’re comfortable” but not that he is certain that
all the rocks have been recovered. This adds to the suspicion that
some samples may still be out there and that the loss volume may be
higher than reported.

------------------------------------------------------------

As for the known, authorized locations of the moon rocks, here’s where
they are around the world, beginning with those in the United States.
I've included web site addresses for locations where web sites could
be found:

VERY INTERESTING BUT LITTLE KNOWN NOTE:

One of my esteemed collegues has infomormed me of something you may
find extremely interesting with rgeard to your question. Believe it or
not, in order to satisfy international customs laws Apollo astronauts
Neil Armstrong, Edwin "Buzz" Aldrin, and Michael Collins filled out
this customs form after returning from foreign soil declaring "moon
rocks", "moon dust" and "samples".

I thought you might appreciate that interesting bit of icing on this
cake.
