Recently I heard (NY area) on the radio a discussion of an interest
the US government has in recruting MIS and computer experts, and
training them to serve as Internet and Gov.-Web protection personell.

There was even an interview with an ex-computer programer who at 62,
decided to change his career and was accepted to the training sposored
by the US Gov. in one of the Universities.

I need the information about this specific radio show (When, by whom
and transcript) and I need to identify the exact US government program
and Point of Contact for this specific matter.

Dear Zr-ga,

Unfortunately, without knowing what radio station you were listening
to and when you heard the show, I don't think there's anyway I could
find you a transcript. If you do remember the station, you may want to
try contacting them and seeing if they keep transcripts.

However, I believe the program you're referring to is the "Federal
Cyber Service: Scholarships for Service" program. This program is
managed by the National Science Foundation ( http://www.nsf.gov/ ).

Federal Cyber Service: Scholarship for Service Program
http://www.ehr.nsf.gov/ehr/due/programs/sfs/

Through this program, the NSF provides funding to U.S. universities
and colleges that they must use to either setup a scholarship program
or for capacity building. The scholarship program would support two
years of tuition, room and board, and stipend for students in the
information assurance and security area. In return for the scholarship
and stipend, students must agree to two years of service as an
information assurance specialist working for the Federal government.
Capacity building funding may be used by the universities for
information assurance faculty and program development.

Information about the most recent round of awards can be found at
http://www.ehr.nsf.gov/ehr/due/programs/sfs/ . The latest solicitation
had proposal deadline of December 19, 2001.

If you are interested in contacting NSF about this program, their
contact information is:

Phone: 703.292.8669
E-mail: sfs@nsf.gov

Lead program director: Dr. Andrew P. Bernat (abernat@nsf.gov)

NSF is not responsible for awarding scholarships to individuals
however. If you wish to apply for a scholarship, you will need to
contact the financial aid offices in the individual schools. This page
lists the schools that have received funding for the scholarship
track.

You can also view a complete list of awards (both scholarships and
capacity building) at:

I also found that President Bush has requested additional funding to
continue this program in the 2003 budget. If you search for
"cybercorps" on this web page, you'll find the paragraph:
