I recently purchased "Economics" and "Great Minds of Western Civilization" on DVD from The Teaching Company. These are generally excellent. However. they involve mostly lecture and do not have visuals (e.g., charts, pictures, timelines, etc.) which would make full use of DVD. What other companies (competitors to The Teaching Company) sell course work on DVD? I would prefer college or post-college level courses across a wide range of disciplines. (PBS sells DVD. However, these seem to be 1-2 hours and not full courses.) All comments greatly appreciated ! |

Ron, Thanks for accepting my suggestion as an answer. I am reposting the information below. A California-based firm called Intelecom offers a wide variety of educational materials on videotape, CD-ROM, or DVD. "By bringing the subject matter to life visually, and linking that visual content to assigned readings and in-class or electronically -- transmitted lectures, a well-produced telecourse can be the key to successful distance learning. INTELECOM offers a wide range of telecourses -- in science & technology, business, social sciences & humanities, and adult education & literacy." Intelecom http://www.intelecom.org/intelecom1.asp Contact info: Intelecom http://www.intelecom.org/ilrn/ilrncontactus.htm ================================ As I mentioned in my earlier comment, there seem to be very slim pickin's in the field of DVD-based courses for adults. I did find one other option that may be interesting if you have a desire to learn more about chemistry. Here's a fellow called 'Chemguy' who offers several courses on DVD: Chemguy http://www.chemguy.com/Course%20Desc.html ================================ Search terms used in locating this information: home study course courses on video courses on dvd college courses college level university level distance learning educational dvd ================================ Since I am virtually certain that more such courses exist, I am going to keep sniffing for clues. I have emailed an online friend who is a political science instructor to ask whether he is aware of any college-level courses on DVD. I'll let you know if anything good materializes. Very best wishes, pinkfreud |

Ron, Having cast a wide net and caught a minnow, I am amazed at the paucity of DVD-based learning material aimed at adults. This looks to me like a niche that needs filling. Surely there's room for more than just The Teaching Company in this field. This is the only promising lead I found for you: A California-based firm called Intelecom offers a wide variety of educational materials on videotape, CD-ROM, or DVD. "By bringing the subject matter to life visually, and linking that visual content to assigned readings and in-class or electronically -- transmitted lectures, a well-produced telecourse can be the key to successful distance learning. Intelecom http://www.intelecom.org/intelecom1.asp Contact info: Intelecom http://www.intelecom.org/ilrn/ilrncontactus.htm It appears that Intelecom is geared toward licensing its products for institutional use, rather than selling directly to the student, but it might be worth your while to contact them for more details. ~Pink |
