Hello richardm2576,
Thank you for your question.
Searching "should you go first" I found that the author's name is
correctly spelled as Albert Kennedy "Rosey" Rowswell. I immediately
found a poem of his with this title, but not the first line as you
recall:
Should You Go First - by Albert Kennedy "Rosey" Rowswell
Should you go first and I remain,
To walk the road alone,
I'll live in memory's garden, dear,
With happy days we've known.
In Spring I'll wait for roses red,
When fades the lilac blue,
In early Fall when brown leaves call
I'll catch a glimpse of you...

I narrowed my search using ["Should You Go First" +song OR lyric OR
music] to find that what you are recalling may actually be a song by
Hank Williams called "Beyond the Sunset":

"BEYOND THE SUNSET--HANK WILLIAMS
Should you go first and I remain,
To walk the road alone
I'll live in memory's garden dear,
With happy days we've known
In spring I'll wait for roses red,
When faith the lilacs bloom
And in early fall when brown leaves fall,
I'll catch a glimpse of you
Should you go first and I remain,
For battles to be fought
Each thing you've touched along the way,
Will be a hallowed spot
I'll hear your voice I'll see your smile
Though blindly I may grope
The memory of your helping hand,
Will buoy me on with hope
(c)Beyond the sunset
Oh blissful (g)morning
When with our savior,
Heaven is be(c)gun
Earth's toiling ended,
Oh glorious (f)dawning
Beyond the (c)sunset (g)
When day is (c)done..."

Beyond The Sunset - Hank Williams
"...The title song, recorded January 10, 1950, was a combination of an
old hymn and a poem from the 19th century. The poem "Should You Go
First" was found in many homes in the south, during the 1940s, in a
book "Poems That Touch The Heart". It is there that Hank might have
read it and although he wasn't the first to record the song, he made
it his own due to his superb style and performance..."
Doc and Chickie Williams also seem to have recorded this in 1948:

"...In 1948, Chickie had a hit record, based on her original
arrangement of the hymn Beyond the Sunset, with the reading Should
You Go First and I Remain. Soon after its release on Wheeling
Records, Beyond the Sunset was charted #3 in Billboard trade
magazines Top 100 Country Music Songs. Hank Williams and Red Foley,
among many others, immediately came out with their own recordings of
Chickies arrangement. Chickie Williams is loved by her many fans for
the purity of her vocal arrangements and her exquisite taste in
choosing songs to record..."
