Question ID: 166119
The browser will not open.

I have tried self repair, uninstall-reinstall, restart
after restart, upgrade to IE6 and the only error I see are:

Error in loading "ASCTRL.OCX"
Error in loading "DXTRANS.DLL"

Both files are in the the System32 file and I have
replaced both files from a newer machine. No effect.

Please advise how to fix this problem

Hello matthewgilmore,

Thank you for your question.

There is little on the Internet, Microsoft Knowledgebase or the usual
Tech Tips sites about this problem. But it seems that Usenet groups
have a number of folks that have experienced the same problem.

After extensive searching, this article seems to be one of the most
promising:

http://groups.google.com/groups?hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&threadm=ehPfQ6SuAHA.2100%40tkmsftngp02&rnum=27&prev=/groups%3Fnum%3D50%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DISO-8859-1%26q%3DIE5%2BOR%2B%2522internet%2BExplorer%2B5%2522%2B%252BError%2B%252Bdxtrans.dll%26sa%3DN%26tab%3Dwg

"I've never seen that error in IE6, but the way it was fixed in
previous versions, you closed IE, renamed comcat.dll (all copies), and
ran the IE setup again."

Other threads confirm the inter-relationship with comcat.dll and
asctrl.ocx and dxtrans.dll.

It did indeed work for the user that asked this question!

This thread echoes the above:
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=IE5+OR+%22internet+Explorer+5%22+%2BError+%2Bdxtrans.dll&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=%236PXO73tAHA.2196%40tkmsftngp03&rnum=28

"FIXED!
Thanks a million, Max!
comcat.dll version incompatibility was the problem and it was easy to
fix.

Not only did it fix IE55SP1, but

--it fixed a serious problems with Symantec System Works 2001 (which
wouldn't open from the System Tray or the main icon and had script
problems when it did open from individual use icons) and

--it fixed QuickBooks Pro which had similar problems just opening
various
items.

--it fixed the IE55SP1 install problems with asctrl.ocx, dxtrans.dll,
and wshom.ocx and viewing splash files.

It appears that NORTON System Works 2001 CAUSED the problem by copying
the wrong version of comcat.dll!!! We probably ought to report this
to Microsoft."

This article provides additional information:
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=IE5+OR+%22internet+Explorer+5%22+%2BError+%2Bdxtrans.dll&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&selm=eobZcFxG%23GA.131%40uppssnewspub04.moswest.msn.net&rnum=32

Search Strategy:

IE5 OR "internet Explorer 5" +Error +dxtrans.dll

A number of other helpful articles appear in this search:
Error +dxtrans.dll OR asctrl.ocx

I trust my research has provided you with potential solutions. If a
link above should fail to work or anything require further explanation
or research, please do post a Request for Clarification prior to
rating the answer and closing the question and I will be pleased to
assist further.

Regards,

May reinstalling windows over the one that you have installed.
You will not lose configurations or data, but always a back up is a good choice.

Hi there!

Your problem with IE is not uncommon, as Clouseau has noted above.
Some have solved it by getting rid of IE altogether and installing
Mozilla instead:

http://www.mozilla.org

Good luck with getting your browser of choice to cooperate!
