I would like to know where or how I could obtain the the DVD for the
FIRST film version of George Orwell's 1984. This is the Black and
White version brought out in 1956 and starring Edmund O'Brien ,
Michael Redgrave and Donald Pleasence
AND NOT the more recent version screened in 1984 staring John Hurt and
Richard Burton.

The version offered by Hollywood's Attic is, alas, a VHS video.

lists 24 of the VHS in stock from Facets Multimedia.  It may be that
the DVD release is forthcoming but I could not locate the 1956 version
on DVD for you.  The Facets website listed only the 1984 version in

It would be cool if a special edition DVD release could be done with
both versions but I did not locate that either.  I posted this in
comments because the answer to your question seems to be "It doesn't
exist yet" and I didn't want to offer you a "non-answer" as an answer.

You may want to bookmark the DVD release calendar at DVDJournal and
keep an eye out for it there.  The calendar site is
http://www.dvdjournal.com/extra/releasecalendar.html and they do note
a release date of March 4, 2003, for the 1984 version.
