Why does the new Star Wars stink so badly?

What percentage of the U.S. movie-going population was either:
A. Revolted by the lustful looks between the queen and the young jedi?
B. Slept throughout the entire movie?
C. Wished they had a clone of their own?
D. Wished Yoda had screamed "cowabunga" like a ninja turtle?
E. Wished Anankin had lost his tongue instead of his mother.

Why oh why is George Lucas letting us down?

Well, you gotta figure he feels a little bit trapped... maybe that's
why he took so long to start the second trilogy.

The first Star Wars movie, like Raiders of the Lost Ark, was a gleeful
exercise in retro movie-making. Inspired by classic westerns and
serials, it was a straightforward and fun movie. Like most movie
scripts, it was the result of paring down the original idea into a
filmable length and structure.

Reasonably enough, Lucas responded to his career-making success by
transforming the leftover material into sequels; a well established
strategy. However, he bit off a larger than usual mouthful in
projecting TWO additional trilogies to round out the story. Not only
is that a huge creative effort (with the corresponding workload) it
runs afoul of the "Rocky" rule...after a while, most of us lose
interest.

Lucas has recently stated that he doesn't plan to do another trilogy
after episode three. You have to think that he doesn't see enough
payback for the work and abuse involved.

Atomfilms.com recently held a competition for Star Wars fan films,
with George Lucas personally choosing a favorite from among the
competitors. Interestingly enough, his choice was an animated short
featuring a little girl singing about the Star Wars merchandise she
wants for Christmas! Kind of says it all, don't you think?

To view Mr. Lucas' choice, and the other fan film winners, visit
Atomfilms at:

http://atomfilms.shockwave.com/af/spotlights/starwars/

For more fan films, try Ifilm at:

Lots of fun at either location. Cheers!

You didn't answer my question. If you couldn't, why did you waste my time?

I think the problem is the anticipation for these new episodes.
People have a tendancy to build a film, episode, experience, whatever
to an unrealistic level and end up being disappointed. The only
mistake Lucas made was making us wait 16 years for these new movies.
The same thing happened with Seinfeld went off the air. It was the
most anticipated series finale ever and everyone felt it was a flop.
I thought they did a great job, it was Seinfeld! And this, I say,
it's Star Wars!

I think George Lucas suffers from the same fascination with technology
that he did all those years ago, it's just that now we're all so used
to great effects that we actually notice a lack of multi dimensional
characters or engaging plot. The new films lack dimension. There's
more texture to a puppet yoda than to a CG one, even if the puppet
looks less "real." The original films were filled with, let's face it,
largely terrible acting. But it was campy, it was like a comic book.
Again, it had texture. Now it's just the same kind of bad acting
we've seen over and over again in other overly computer reliant
movies. As with the ET re-release, in a 2002 context it just doesn't
stand up. I guess you can't go home again.

F)...saw the first one a dozen times 25 years ago when the technology
was still new, have seemn them all repeated to death, and just don't
care anymore.

OK, maybe that's just me.

missy-ga <-- went to see SpiderMan again tonight and laughed at the SW
people lined up in the rain.

Chromedome-ga gave an excellent answer to a foolish question. Perhaps
andrew-ga's parents need to keep their credit cards locked up more
securely...

Good answer! Chromedome-ga. You did your best! Ignore ranking of
you, I hope Google does. It was a stupid question.

Rather than hoping Google ignores the low ranking of a reasonable
answer to an unreasonable question, I think it makes more sense to
hope that Google researchers ignore the unreasonable questions. This
is called "not feeding the trolls."

I personally slept during the whole film, with eyes opened. This film
has great special effects, a story which seems to be good (if the
result hasn't been seen), but isn't worth losing one's times to see
it. (I know it because I did it). It doesn't have any soul. It only
seems to be a list of tricks to do a good science-fiction film... but
a great science-fiction film can't be just tricks. So, acually, it
stinks. (I allowed myself to give my opinion because that seems to be
what you expect).

As silly as the question is, Chromedome clearly did not answer the
question. I doubt anyone has the ability to answer that question with
any accuracy. Hats off to andrew for showing everyone how greedy the
google researchers are. I do hope the rating has alerted the Google
Answers staff to evaluate chromedome's actions.

I have a feeling that dozens of researchers where all attempting to
respond to this question (chromedome just won the race) and it is
evidence of a failing system. This is beta, and the system need to be
ridden of researchers like this.

The questions will be silly, difficult, and obscure - but they should
not be answered if they are unanswerable! In this case, chromedome
clearly just wanted to snatch up his $3 and clearly did not know the
answer. Hats off on the low rating awarded him by andrew.

I am seeing too many researchers answering questions with a bunch of
facts and links, too often not having the slightest clue about the
topic at hand (and it shows in many of the answers here), and far too
often not directly answering the question at all.

If you can't answer the question, don't have knowledge of the topic
(or at least enough intelligence to give the impression that you do)
and are not planning on answering the question - then DO NOT answer
it!

I know the Google staff will be watching these posts in this time of
Beta, and I hope this is marked a a perfect example. Nobody should be
applauding chromedome. We all know the question was silly/stupid, it
does not mean andrew should be charged $4 because a researcher said
"oh boy, I'm a click away from $3!"

I'd also like to note that I am given the impression that andrew has
some knowledge of Star Wars, but maybe not a 'fan' as it seems.
andrew certainly knows more about Star Wars than I do (I don't know
any of the characters names) and even I didn't learn a single thing
from chromedome's bland answer.

Smarten up researchers. As was said, "don't feed the trolls". This
isn't your favorite message forum or a newsgroup or anything, people
are paying REAL money to hear what you have to say.

I agree with mork in that andrew was right not to give credit for this
answer, and with mara that the question should not have been answered
in the first place.

On the other hand, I would refer andrew to a forum of almost 9,000
freaks and geeks called Something Awful (
http://forums.somethingawful.com ), where amongst other things there
are quite a few debates going on about the new Star Wars movies, those
who hate them:

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=157267
[that thread, it should be noted, is a thread started by the owner of
SomethingAwful, lowtax]

those who love them:

http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=156505
http://forums.somethingawful.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=155314

And some more whimsical debates about Episode 3 and the plausibility
of a Dark Yoda:

Additionally this is a place I think you'd fit in, though you can
browse for yourself and decide. It's $10 to join officially and become
a poster, but you can look at other people's reactions and see how you
think people feel. Up to you, though.

Certainly... The question is silly; and is silly to try to answer this
kind of questions. If a researcher has not the answer then should not
respond.

What are you talking about, Andrew???? The new Star Wars is BY FAR
better than Episode 1. As for the other ones, were you even born yet
when those were on the big screen? What I mean is, those must've had
terrible special fx because they were made before computers had more
than 8MB RAM. Ask anybody....this was one of the best Star Wars.
(not that I remember much of the original ones).

I think that episode two was much better than episode one, but it was
still missing something.... But the correct awnser, is are you ready??
George Lucas has lost touch with 99.9999999999999999999% of people in
the world, he is fabulously wealthy and his attitude shows it. Every
interview i have seen with him shows someone who doesn't know what the
audiance wants to see, he goes on about it being a fantasy for small
children but ya know who i see in the theatres?? Loser Gen x'ers who
are so geeky that it makes me feel like the fonz. That is the correct
awnser and i dont even want your dam 4 bucks..... lol!!!!!
